    The Set Up (24)

Bette was working late when she got a call from Angelica that was rather simple. She picked up the phone to a frustrated tone of voice.

    “It’s crazy-time.”

The term Angelica had coined referred to a time near the end of the year, when parent-teacher conferences were the worst. Tina was a complete mess when parents liked to parade into her office for everything they’d been upset about with their child’s shortcomings. The stress of it nearly killed her, and so about once a year, when the conferences were coupled with something else, Tina was a complete wreck. She was overwhelmed, and exhibited what Shane laughed off to Bette as “pregnant woman crazy.”

And now it was time again. Something had combined to set her off, and Angelica was entirely frustrated. Bette could tell.

Looking first to her watch and then raking a hand through her hair, Bette sighed. “Conferences.”

“Exactly.” Angelica knew better than to try and warn Bette from coming over, because she realized over time that Bette wanted to be there for Tina. Bette had explained to her that Tina was going through a lot, and sometimes people had a rough time. She didn’t want her love to be alone. “Bring chocolate,” Angelica chuckled quietly, hearing Tina grumbling to herself in the kitchen. “Lots of chocolate.”

“Is she trying to cook?” Because, in that mood, it was only an attempt.

    “Yup.”

“Oh lord,” Bette whispered, placing everything down on her desk. “Okay, I’m coming over.”

“You’re already later than you said you’d be … I think she’ll be really upset. Should I distract her?”

Bette laughed, “Don’t be ridiculous – it’ll be just fine. Go get all your homework done, okay? Just relax. It’s fine. I’ve got it.”

Angelica had become quite comforted by such phrases from Bette, nodding along and realizing how exhausted she really was. “I had a long gym class today.”

“Good. So you need to sleep it off. Don’t worry. It’s almost nine. I’m sure you have other things to worry about, kiddo. Just get some rest.”

“I think you’re forgetting she’s my mom,” Angelica teased, “Maybe I can help you … deal with it. You know?”

“Tomorrow you’ll thank me for this,” Bette chuckled, “Go to sleep, kid.”
