The Sound Track of Our Lives

All the ways I cared for you

Are working like you want them to

As I break down and you stay

                Strong

I write my own forgiveness song

I try to lie down and sleep it off

                Like a drug

                But it’s not your concern

                Another night it’s only right

That I toss and I turn in the bed that I made

Bette lets her head drop, as she plays to keyboard, swaying ever so slightly. She closes her eyes and lifts her head to the microphone to continue singing.

                The wine dark room, the

                Flashing eyes

That hung me from my string of lies

You said you were numb from

                Wondering

I guess I was not listening

I try to lie down and sleep it off

                Like a drug

                But it’s not your concern

                Another night it’s only right

That I toss and I turn in the bed that I made

Bette opens her eyes to look at her hands. She watches them with a feeling of betrayal.

With my own hands I fashioned this

                Frame

And into the wood I carved out my

    Name

I try to lie down and sleep it off

                Like a drug

                But it’s not your concern

                Another night it’s only right

That I toss and I turn in the bed that I made”

As the women in the bar all around them sprang to life in applause, the gang just sits in reflective silence.

“Wow,” Dana exclaims after a moment.

                “Damn” Shane agrees.

“Holy *****,” Alice shakes her head and turns to Tina. Tina had not taking her eyes off the stage. She watched Bette play with a stunned look on her face. Slowly Tina began to get over the shock enough to listen to the words. She now watched Bette get up from her stool, nod at the drummer in thanks and walk out of the front door never once looking at the crowd.

On stage the band had now started their set. At an instrumental break in the first song the guitarist, turned around to mouth, “Who was that?” at the drummer. She only got a shrug. She turned back around in time to sing the next verse.

At the back of the bar, Kit stood laughing. “She always has to be the best, doesn’t she? I should have called her.”
