The Veil Of Darkness
Time flew by and before I knew it, spring break was upon us. We had decided that we would try to concieve our baby while Jackson was spending time with his other grandma, Eric’s mother. We haven’t heard a peep from him, he was still in rehab serving his time and his mother had been on our side. He was her son and she loved him, but she couldn’t side with him, not when the life of her youngest grandson was a stake. A social worker checked in on them from time to time, and they felt comfortable with her taking care of Jackson.
Mine and Dana’s sports medicine and therapy office was thriving. Our appointment book was filled for at least four months. We were seeing anyone from high school athletes to pro athletes. Our business was great, and I was completely happy.
”Dr. Kennard-Porter?”
”Are you ready for me,” I said looking up from the paperwork on my desk.
”Yes, the patient is in exam room four,” Hayley, one of my nurses said.
”Brilliant.”
We both walked to the exam room. I looked at the patient file on my iPad and knocked on the door, as I was reading, my heart sank. It can’t be her. I walked in and the color drained from my face, it was her. I really didn’t need her here, in my life again.
”Miss. Karella, what brings you to see me?”
”Come on Bette, we sat next to each other for a semester, you can call me Nadia.”
”Of course Nadia, how are you,” I said sitting, Hayley reading through the file.
”I’ve been better, I rolled my ankle while training for the zombie run. I went to the ER and got treated but they wanted me to see a specialist. I remembered you had your own office, so I called the number on the card you gave me and here I am.”
”Ah, lucky you still had my card,” I said and cleared my throat. I really just wanted to get out of there.
We talked about treatment, and the whole time I was uncomfortable. We never talked about the kiss and we never even talked after that happened. I tried talking her into seeing Dana instead of me, but she insisted on being my patient.
