Time Heals All Wounds, Ch. 1 (Sequel to “All Shook Up”)
“I’ve been places in my head
Behind me worse than what’s ahead
And on my path just like a dream
Takes me from the in between
From out of nowhere you came strong as stone
And now I’ll never have to be alone
What it is I know
You have always been my safe home
I walk, I run, I burn out into you
You have always been my safe home
My whole world has moved on”
chorus from “Safe Home” by Anthrax

Shane drummed her fingers nervously on her knee and took a look at the room around her. Catching sight of a picture on the desk in front of her, she leaned forward to study it. Just as she was leaning forward, the door opened behind her, and she quickly let herself fall back into her seat and tried to nonchalantly cross her legs as if she hadn’t been nosing around.
An older black man strode into the room, a smile on his face as he came to her side and offered his hand. “Ms. McCutcheon, right? I’m Curtis Taylor. It’s nice to meet you. And don’t bother with that Mr. Taylor stuff – it makes me feel older than I am. Call me Curtis.”
Shane returned his handshake and then watched as he went and sat behind the desk. “Just call me Shane. It’s nice to meet you, too, but” she leaned forward. “Look, I don’t wanna seem rude, but why am I here?”
Curtis laughed lightly as he turned around and opened the filing cabinet behind him, retrieving a thin manila envelope. “I can understand your curiosity. If I were you and a lawyer called me out of the blue to come into his office, I believe I’d be mighty concerned.”
“I guess,” Shane said slowly, beginning to once again drum her fingers anxiously on her knee. “The message you left for me was pretty vague.”
“Well, allow me to solve the mystery,” Curtis replied, extracting a pair of reading glasses from his shirt pocket and slipping them on. “This concerns the estate of a Ms. Jennifer Schecter.”
“Estate?” Shane asked in confusion. “There’s nothing left. The house burned down.”
“Yes, it did,” Curtis agreed, opening the envelope and sliding some papers out. “But Ms. Schecter had life insurance.”
