Time Heals All Wounds, Ch. 1 (Sequel to “All Shook Up”)
Shane’s confusion grew. “Okay, but what does that have to do with me?”
Curtis peered at her over his glasses. “You’re the recipient.”
“What? Me?” Shane demanded.
“In anticipation of their upcoming marriage, Ms. Schecter and her fiance both purchased life insurance, naming the other as the recipient. I’m assuming that didn’t work out, because about six months ago she went back and had the policy changed so that you were the recipient,” Curtis explained.
Shane rubbed her face. “Are you sure this isn’t a joke? Did Alice put you up to this?”
“Shane, I can assure you this is not a joke,” Curtis told her. “I have the paperwork to prove it.”
Accepting the papers from his outstretched hand, Shane began to flip through them.
Curtis leaned back and regarded her silently. “Well, aren’t you going to ask how much the policy was worth?”
“Huh?” Shane looked up, a dazed look on her face. “I don’t care about the money,” she said honestly. I’d rather have Jenny here with us.
Looking surprised, Curtis smiled. “I don’t hear that often.” He rose and came behind her, a pen in his hand. “But in case you do get curious” He leaned over her shoulder and circled something on the paper.
Shane peered at the figure and blinked. She looked up at Curtis, then back to the paper, and then once again back at him. “One million dollars?”
Dana shook the empty cereal box and then pitched it into the trash with a disappointed sigh. Once again, Carmen forgot to pick up some more cereal, or even tell me we were out, she thought exasperatedly.
As Dana turned to rummage in the refrigerator for something else to eat for breakfast, she tripped over a pair of Shane’s shoes. She caught herself on the counter and then turned around and kicked angrily at the shoes, sending them flying haphazardly across the kitchen. And once again, Shane forgot to put her shoes away.
Dana let out a frustrated groan. As much as she loved Shane and Carmen, living with them was getting to be damn near impossible. When she’d learned that Shane and Jenny’s house had burned down during the earthquake, she’d immediately offered to let Shane move in. It was then Dana learned that Carmen had been about to move in with Shane, so she ended up at Dana’s as well. Only making the situation worse was that Alice, her apartment left partially flooded and without electricity, had ended up moving into Dana’s as well.
