    #TLW10 Campfire Chapter Three

After about 15 minutes of silently staring at the outside of the tent she was supposed to be sharing with Jodie, Bette slowly turned and walked towards Kit’s tent. “Kit?” she said softly.

The flap was pulled back and Kit looked out at her distraught sister. “I was wondering when you would make your way around here.” Stepping aside she waved her arm. “Come on.”

Bending down Bette stepped inside the tent and sat down on the cot set up for Kit to sleep on. There would be no sleeping directly on the ground for the older Porter sister. However, before Bette could even settle herself Kit was on her. “What the fuck!” She barked, and then realizing her voice would carry across the campground she lowered her volume, but not the judgmental tone. “What the fuck is wrong with you!?”

Bette stared at her sister, so stunned by the harshness in her voice that her mind went blank for a moment. “I don’t know, it just happened.”

Kit pounced on the tepid response. “Shit like this don’t just happen! I mean you don’t just wake up with somebody by accident.” Continuing her attack, she asked, “Did you forget?”

“Forget what?” Bette answered back with her own question, her annoyance finally coming to the surface as her mind cleared.

“How terrible your relationship with Tina was! I mean, you were miserable. You hated each…!” Kit’s voice has risen again in her anger. “You hated each other!” she whispered vehemently.

However surprised Bette was by Kit’s outburst, she was even more disappointed by what it implied…that Kit had not been listening over the past several years when Bette and Tina had talked to the elder Porter, both individually and together, explaining to her what they had been struggling with at the time of their break up. Tina particularly had spent quite a bit of time with Kit when she would come over to spend time with her niece. They would share a glass of ice tea while they watched Angie play, and Tina would share with Kit the fears and insecurities that had led up to her disastrous and misguided foray into heterosexual relationships. She had worked hard at showing Kit how remorseful she was for the way she had treated Bette, a woman she so clearly loved. Together they thought Kit had come to realize that how they had treated each other during that horrid six months before and after their breakup was not indicative of what they meant to each other, or who they were. It was indicative however of what happens when we allow our fears and insecurities to speak for our heart, something both women regretted deeply. Listening to Kit now, Bette wondered if Kit had paid any attention at all during those many conversations.

    1. Great! I hated the fact that in the episode there wasn’t a Bette & Tina “moment”; not even a little hug. IC sometimes (many times) got on my nerves.
I absolutely loved Tina’s wrath. I mean, I like Alice but sometimes she really needs to shut the hell up. lol Thank you for this.

    2. Wonderful! I wish that you would have been one of the writers on the show as the quality of the stories would have skyrocketed the show into an amazing representation of our culture. Thank you for this delightful story around the campfire as I appreciate that Alice finally got her words thrown back at her to digest. Thank you!

    3. I love your ending much better. I was disappointed with Kit’s reaction in the show. She is Bette’s sister and Bette never made it a secret that she always loved Tina and wanted her back.
