    Turning the Handle Part 4

You want me to – what? Danas asked, her eyes as large as saucers. Fear permeated the room – she was scared to death. She looked at Lara like she had a grown another head.

My mom and sister are coming to town for the weekend, I would like you to meet them. Lara repeated.

But, er, uhm Dana could not form a single coherent thought. What would I say, what would I wear? They know about me, about us? They dont care that were, that youre . . . Ok, none of this was coming out right. Dana was severely tongue tied.

Lara walked over and stroked Danas arms and reached for her hands. Relax, baby. Ive talked to them about us. Come with me.

Dana allowed Lara to lead her to the couch. She needed to feel those strong arms around her – some re-assurance. Coming out to her parents had not gone well, and that was definitely an understatement. Now, Lara wanted her to meet her mom and sister – NO, NO, NO. She couldnt do it.

Lara was looking at her expectantly. Dana took a deep breath. This seemed very important to Lara.

Lara wrapped her arms more tightly around Dana. She turned her head and kissed her lips softly – not a heated, lets have ***** right now kiss, just an everything is going to be alright kiss. Desire flowed so easily between them.

Its time I told you my story – that will help you understand.

Dana nodded and leaned back into the couch allowing Lara the space she needed to formulate her words.

Lara began quietly to avoid frightening Dana further.

I have never really not known I was *****. I dated a few boys in high school, nothing serious and it just never felt right for me. I went straight to culinary school from there. This is where my world opened up. I learned a lot that first year. I was fairly good at picking up the techniques and was having a ball. We got to the pastry design class and I started to have some trouble. Just wasnt picking it up.

The instructor, a saucy brunette named Jill, offered to give me some private instruction. I took her up on her offer and we began meeting 3 times a week at the school. One night after a lesson in classic dough, she asked if I wanted to go get a drink. By this time, I was very attracted to her and readily agreed to go out for drinks.

She took me to a bar downtown that I had never been in. We sat down at a table and ordered drinks. As my eyes adjusted to the light, I looked around and noticed the bar was filled with women. I knew then that she was definitely interested in me too and I got nervous. She must have sensed it and reached over took my hand and kissed it. She asked if this was ok and I nodded not sure what to say. Jill and I continued to see each other throughout the class and beyond. I learned a lot about pastries and even more about myself and the feelings that had always been there. It was amazing, but she was somewhat possessive. At first, it was nice to have this attractive older woman interested in me, but then it was just overwhelming.

Dana fought the urge to cover her hears like a small child, instead she wrung her hands not wanting to hear about another lover. The green-eyed monster was staking its claim. Lara looked over at Dana, saw her expression and whispered Ancient history, honey. before she touched Danas hands. Dana nodded, gulped a breath and waited for the rest of the story.

I went home one weekend to visit with my family. Jill was not happy about it, but I hadnt been in a while and my sister was going through some teenage crisis. I hadnt been home for an hour when the doorbell rang and it was Jill. Only my sister was home at the time, but my heart was racing as they no idea I was *****, much less involved with someone. I led her out front and started to talk with her, but she was so irritable. I just needed to get her to go home. She started to get close and kiss me. And wouldnt you know, my parents picked that opportunity to come home.

There was no way they didnt see us. I knew I would have to tell them. As firmly as I could, I let Jill know I would be back on Monday and we could talk then. As you might guess this went over badly, but I had more pressing things to deal with.

Lara paused in the story. Dana was staring at her intently waiting for the rest, but she needed a glass of water before she continued. She retreated to the kitchen and returned with 2 glasses. She placed them on the table and then sat back on the couch. She took Danas hands once again and kissed them softly, before settling into the couch again.

Now, where was I? Ah yes, telling the parents. After seeing Jill to her car, I took a couple of deep breaths and went inside. Mom, Dad and Rachel were in the kitchen. Mom was crying, Dad silent and Rachel confused. I asked them to come sit down that I needed to talk with them. They each nodded and we sat at the dining table. I just blurted it out. Mom and Dad had seen me kissing another woman – what else could I say?

Lara shook her head, recalling her terror and insecurities, recalling that this was not the way it was supposed to have happened.

Mom was still crying – said she needed a moment and went upstairs. Dad said nothing and then followed Mom. Rachel looked at me, giggled and said – wow you sure know how to spice up the weekend. She and I talked for a little while about what this meant and she was so cool about it. I love my sister so much.

Lara paused again, grinning. Her sister meant the world to her.

Later that evening, as I was sitting in the back yard contemplating packing my stuff and heading back to school, Mom came out and pulled up a chair. She began to ask questions – how long have I known, who was the woman from the front yard, is it serious? I answered the questions as best I could. She took my hands in hers and asked one final question, Are you happy? I cried as I said I was happy being who I was. She kissed my forehead and whispered, This would not have been the road I chose for you, Lara, but if you are happy, its ok with me. I love you.

We sat out there for a long time that night, just the two of us. She listened to me as I told her about Jill and how it was most definitely over. I was still interested in women, just not Jill anymore. Mom did – and still does – her best to understand me. Dad was a bit harder, he was always more reserved, but I was his little girl and with Mom on my side, he came around. He died a year ago.

Tears were running down both of their faces at the end of Laras story. Danas mind struggled to wrap itself around Laras story; so different from hers at this point. She was a bit jealous of Laras familys response to their daughter and longed for that acceptance from her own family. They held each other closely for a few minutes not speaking until Lara broke the silence again.

So, Mom and Rachel are fine with me and Ive told them so much about you. I know you are scared. That your parents reaction has you reeling, but I think you will like them and I know they will like you. So, please – will you meet them?

Dana took another moment, a deep breath and nodded. I have no idea what to wear, what I will say or anything else, but this is obviously important to you. Thank you for sharing your story with me. I learn a little more about you every day. With a small grin, she added Damn, I can deny you nothing.

The pair kissed lightly, small sweet innocent kisses. Passion and desire began to force its way into their embrace. They giggled and reveled in the moment. Their closeness creating a barrier to the outside world once again.

Well, well, look whos left the den of love. Alice taunted, stretching that last word out just to get a rise from Dana.

Dana flipped Alice off, rolled her eyes and turned a nice shade of pink. Yeah, Yeah. She added with a small hint of dejection in her voice.

Shane was the first to notice. Trouble with your woman? she asked innocently enough.

Lara wants me to meet her mom and sister this weekend. I agreed, but this has disaster written all over it. Dana explained and then reached for her tea.

Whats the big deal, Dana? Maybe the sister has a nice rack. Alice prodded.

Oh, geez, Alice. Dont you ever think about anything other than *****? Dana drew her cheeks in and gave Alice the I cant believe you just said that face.

Alice snorted, pretended to ponder the question and answered honestly – Well, no, not really.

Shane took the opportunity to steer the conversation back to safer ground before these two tore each other to pieces. Seriously, Dana – its just her mom, sister, and dinner. Nothing to it.

But, what is someone sees us, hears us? They dont like me? What if . all of Danas self-doubt came pouring out in an endless list of questions.

Alice cuffed Dana playfully on the back of the head. Youre out, you big dork, and stop borrowing problems. I am sure if they raised someone like Lara that they are nice people.

Dana nodded. Her friends were right. Lara was right. She was still jittery, but she wouldnt disappoint Lara.
