The story starts as a sort of near ending point of the story. When we meet everyone (nearly) it is a year ahead.

Bette is moving next door to be with her girlfriend Grace, who is Tina’s best friend. Tina is also living there and is going out with Bette’s twin brother Eric.

The second chapter zooms backwards to the year before Bette’s move into the friends’ home.

Tina is just moving to LA (to live with her friend Grace) from New York and Bette is moving to LA to live with her twin brother Eric and ex-girlfriend Alice.

The night everyone meets, Bette and Tina snap at each other and generally don’t like one another. The twins (Eric and Bette) each flirt with the friends, while Alice remains a 3^rd wheel. BUT while at the Planet, Eric gets kicked out and Grace disappears, leaving Bette and Tina to some very dirty dancing that confuses and excites both of them. And because of a game, the two end of making out!

The next day, Grace flips out on Tina because of the kiss. Tina denies she has feelings for Bette. But after Bette stops by to check on her, they both acknowledge there may be something there. They both consider that Bette’s brother and Tina’s friend like each of them so they agree to tread lightly.

After a few incidences of making out, sexy “almost” sex, playful behavior way up in a tree, and a confrontation between Tina and her very homophobic sister Mickey, they decide to come clean.

It doesn’t go well. Grace ends up throwing a glass that cuts Tina and fleeing.

Bette and Tina consummate their relationship that night. But with the pressure of losing her best friend, being outed by her homophobic family, and moving into her first gay relationship, Tina damages Grace’s car, breaks up with Bette, and leaves in a daze with her sister.

Months go by before Alice convinces Bette to go get Tina. Grace (who is making up very slowly with Tina) and Alice tag along. While in New York, Grace makes her move on Bette, infuriating Tina (and Alice), who is still confused about what she wants to do. While fighting in the hotel room about Grace’s move, Bette sleeping with other women while they’ve been apart, and Tina’s indecision, Bette decides that they should part for good. She leaves New York immediately.
