    Two Days On Our Own

“I’ve seen your scars”, Alice blurted out abruptly. She was too curious, she couldn’t help it, she had to spill her beans. That was her nature.

Dante turned to her and blinked his eyelids slowly.

    Alice arched her eyebrows.

    “Aren’t you surprised Or… pissed?”.

    “No, because I knew it”.

    Alice gasped.

    “You did?”.

    “Mm-mm”.

    “Oh”.

She looked down at her own hands, suddenly embarrassed.

    “I’m sorry”, she muttered, then.

“It’s okay”, he shrugged casually, “It had to happen, sooner or later”.

“Well, better later than sooner, right?”, Alice smiled tentatively.

Dante pinched the bridge of his nose and squeezed his eyes shut.

    “Yeah…”, he breathed out, shyly.

Alice stood there for a second, as insecure as she had been that same morning. Finally, she rested her hand on Dante’s knee and brushed it lightly.

“Hey Dan… I just wanted to tell you that you look great, even with all those scars. I’d even say that you look even more charming because of them”.

“Shut up…”, he giggled in discomfort.

She parted her lips, exhaled a long sigh.

“Don’t do this, Dante”, she murmured.

    “Do what?”.

“This. Don’t be embarrassed. You remind me of Dana”.

Dante frowned, suddenly wordless. He knew about Dana. Not so much, but enough to understand Alice’s sudden discomfort. He knew that Dana Fairbanks was Alice’s lover and partner, and he knew that she had passed away a few years earlier. She had cancer, and she had gone through a mastectomy. It hadn’t helped her to survive.

Dante covered Alice’s hand with his own and squeezed it, gently. Behind the sunglasses, Alice’s eyes were turning teary.

“After the mastectomy I saw her naked, one day. She was so embarrassed and ashamed…”, Alice whispered, “…And I remember telling her that she was beautiful. Because she really was. I was just telling the truth…”.

    “I know…”.

“…Just like I’m telling you the truth, now”.

    “I know”.

“Are you ashamed of your scars? Do you really think that they can mist your beauty? And I am not talking about your body. I am talking about your soul, the man you are”.

Dante didn’t say anything. He just took another drag from his cigarette and then mashed it up with his shoe.

“You really remind me of Shane a lot, sometimes. I mean, the brighter side of Shane. It’s like…”, Alice scoffed, “…Shane wears her dark side like a flag. It is so visible, so clear. And just a few people know how to look at what lies beneath that… that dark blanket. A lot of joy and hopes and naivety… All those things that infancy carries and that Shane never had”.

Dante blinked repeatedly, thoughtfully, and nodded. His eyes were lost on something invisible on the ground.

“…You, on the contrary, always show your bright side. You’re funny, and charming. You are reliable, your smile is contagious. You never seem to lose your faith or your positive look on everything and everyone. And yet… there’s this… this…”, Alice gestured, trying to find the right words to explain what she saw, what she had seen, “…This night inside of you, this darkness…”.

Dante clenched his jaw and bent his head, his chin almost touching his large chest.

“…And I don’t know where it comes from, but what I know is that you always control it. You know how to deal with it. You’re balanced and strong and –“.

“Don’t talk to me like I’m some sort of knight in shining armor, Al, ‘cause I’m not”, Dante cut in, and despite the sharpness of his words, his voice was quiet.

    Alice shook her head calmly.

“No, you’re not. I know. I’m just telling you that you’re a good man”, she stated frankly.

And Dante looked up, watched her straight in the eyes and Alice noted the same tonality of green that Shane’s eyes had. And the same sadness behind a shadow of coolness.

She smiled and stroked his unshaved cheek.

“You’re a good man. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you don’t deserve what life has given you. Whatever it was, it has turned you into the man you are today”, she repeated, in a lower voice.

He smiled back, tilting his head almost tentatively.

    “Al, I –“.

Alice covered his mouth with her hand.

    “Shut up, bully, shut up”.

Then, she hugged him and disappeared into his strong embrace.

”…I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am”
