    Through a child’s eyes

     

    Do you love me?

     

    Without a doubt.  Bette smiled.

     

    Then youre ready.

     

    Tina yelled for Dakota and she came to eat, sopping wet.  Bette threw her a towel.  Dakota made herself comfy on a blanket in front of Bette and Tina so that she was facing them.

     

    They started eating when Tina began to speak.  Dakota, honey, Bette and I want to talk to you about something.

     

    What?

     

    Its important, ok?

     

    Ok.

     

    Its about before you were born.  Tina said.  When I used to live out here and knew Bette and Alice and Dana.  Did you know that Bette and I used to live together?

     

    Dakota shook her head.

     

    We did.  We loved each other very much.

     

    Well I love Bette too.  Dakota said.

     

    I know you do and thats great.  Tina said carefully.  But I loved Bette in a different way.

     

    What way?

     

    Dakota, your mom and I were in love.  Bette said after a while of silence.

     

    In love?  Dakotas eyes grew wide and she didnt finish her bite.

     

    Every since Dakota was old enough to talk and comprehend what she was saying, Tina explained the different types of homes.  Dakota knew all about ***** people and how two women could love each other just the same as a man and a woman.  That was a relief during this conversation because Dakota already understood the meaning behind Tinas statement.  And Tina was relieved it wouldnt elicit any questions regarding the fact that they were two women.

     

    Yes, sweetie.  I was in love with Bette.  We lived together and loved each other for seven years.  Thats longer than you are old.  Tina said.

     

    What happened?

     

    We got into a fight and decided it would be best if we each did different things.  I moved to New York City and your mom moved to a couple different places.  Bette explained.

     

    Why didnt you just make up?

     

    We tried, honey.  Some things just dont work out the way you want them to.  And I wouldve never had you if Bette and I hadnt moved away from each other.

     

    Dakota was silent for a minute.  Tina swore she could see the wheels turning inside her little head, trying to comprehend everything that was just thrown at her.

      That was magnificent. Truly from the mouths of babes comes such honesty and genuine heartfelt emotions. Dakota took everything in her stride while Bette and Tina had agonized and struggled about how, when, where and what to tell Dakota.
      You have shown how the simple truth is always the best policy. Brava!
