What Just Happened – CH04

Shane answered her phone and Alice filled her in on what shed told Dana about her feelings toward Tanya, and made faces as she waited Shanes sage reply and advice. From time to time Alice shared the phone with Dana so she could hear Shane ramble on about sharing the same suspicions, but being cautious about saying anything until there was confirmed evidence. Seeing as Alice had spilled the beans, there was no longer a need for caution and she confirmed what Alice said. Dana looked disappointed from time to time, but couldnt hold anything against her friends knowing they were only looking out for her best interest. Alice continued to talk as Dana responded to her ringing cell phone. She pointed at it letting Alice know it was Tanya calling again. Alice made a face and motioned for Dana to end the call.

No, Im talking to someone at the country club about a possible match, she lied. No, probably not much longer, why? Dana rolled her eyes.

Just end the call. Alice whispered hoping Dana would hear while motioning the same gesture.

I have to go. Yes, now. Bye. Dana ended the call.

Tanya just called Dana again. She called earlier too. Alice tattled and laughed at Shanes response. Yeah, she got rid of her, but not without getting her ear chewed off. We really have to get this done quickly. Yeah, okay. Ill call you back in a little while. Bye.

Dana was sitting in the car semi pouting with her arms crossed over her chest.

Whats the matter now? Alice inquired.

She wanted to know when Id be back. She says she wants to make a nice dinner, which needed to be hot when its eaten.

Okay?

Alice its barely lunch time.

Alice looked at her watch. Yeah, youre right. Shes really paranoid isnt she?

Yeah, she is and as you pointed out, I apparently hadnt noticed til now. Dana stated sounding pretty pissed. So, what did Shane say?

Well, she says you should tell Tanya youd like to get another cat and see how she reacts to it. Alice stated assuredly. Observe her body language and that should give you an indication of her true feelings.

Thats it? She didnt say anything about the money stuff?

Yeah, she said you should leave money for her to run errands for you and see if she gives you change or the receipt.

Anything else? What about her clinginess or merging as you guys call it?

Hum? Didnt really get into that, but I think if you tell her youd rather do things your way instead of doing things the way she wants to that might help you see what we see. Dana, you were doing fine before she came along, go back to that. Remember the mistake I made with Lisa?

Dana looked puzzled.

The male identified *****?

Oh, yeah. Okay, what about him. Her? Whatever!

Remember, I thought he was hot and all that when I decided I wanted to go back to guys? Dana nodded. Well, that turned out to be a disaster all for me wanting to be with someone. Sometimes, its best to wait than to rush in ya know?

Dana considered what Alice was saying and nodded her head again. She was still a little afraid of confronting Tanya in a non-threatening way, but knew it had to be done. She looked at her watch debating whether she should go back home or spend more time with Alice.

Wanna grab a bite? I need something to settle my nerves. This has all been too much for me. Dana inquired looking at her watch again.

Yeah. Sure. I didnt eat this morning anyway.

Dana and Alice got back into the car and headed downtown. Neither spoke and they kept their eyes on the road. Alice played with her phone while Dana tapped her fingers on the steering wheel. Tension began to fill the car and it was making Dana uncomfortable. Shed never had an easy time with stress or crisis and this time was no different than any other. She fumbled with the radio trying to find a station she liked. She kept looking at her watch in between her fumbling.

You okay Dane?

Uh, yeah. Sure. Shouldnt I be?

Im not sure. You keep looking at your watch and fumbling with the radio. Is there something on your mind?

Casa de Mis Amigas okay? Dana asked, changing the subject.

Mexican? Okay.

Dana pulled into the lot and got out. She walked into the restaurant without saying anything. Alice jumped and followed in a huff. She realized that Dana was going through a lot, but she didnt have to be rude about it. Its not like she wasnt dealing with her own issues not to mention worrying about Tina. She didnt mean to get upset, but she couldnt help herself. She found Dana sitting at a small table looking at the menu. Alice couldnt hold in her annoyance and discretely went off on Dana.

Listen, I know this has been pretty tough on you and I respect that youre a little upset and confused, but you cant treat me like this Dana. In spite of any feelings I may have for you, Im your friend first and please dont forget that. Im here to help, not hurt you.

Dana put the menu down and looked up at Alice who was looking pretty sullen. She felt bad for hurting Alices feelings although she hadnt meant to. The entire situation was stressful for her and she wasnt handling it all very well. Rejection and fear was a way of life for her and it was easier to digress into that than to face the problem. She saw Tanya was a positive distraction in spite of her manipulation; however, that was all about to change.

Im sorry Alice. I really feel bad for hurting your feelings. I shouldnt have. You know how hard it is for me to deal with people. Its not like I got the best training. Dana reached out her hand for Alices. You guys are all I have. I cant call my mother or father and talk to them about anything. I feel like a reject and that only place I feel comfortable is with you guys. I do feel especially close to you though. Dana confided.

Alice held Danas hand tightly and smiled.

Its okay. She said softly. Just dont do it again. She teased smacking Danas hand. Im more sensitive than people give me credit for. Yeah, I can be flaky at times, but deep down, Im a real softy.

I know you are Alice. Truth be told, Ive always felt a special closeness to you out of the whole group. Dana confessed. I love everyone, but I can honestly say I feel the closest to you. I get uncomfortable with Bette and Tina sometimes because they always seem to have it together. Shane is really cool, but Im so not on her level socially. Marina intimidates me even without knowing it, but with you, theres always a calm. Safety even. I know it may not seem like it, but I am glad you told me about Tanya. Not that I really know what my type is, but she doesnt seem to be it though. Dana stated sadly. Alice was taken with Danas confessions and candor. Lara was so good to me and I felt good when I was with her, but I messed that up pretty bad. I even stopped eating at the country club so I wouldnt run into her and I timed my use of the locker room too. Crazy huh?

Alice shook her head no understanding how that could feel. She was content now and felt better having Dana open up and share her deepest feelings.

The waitress came over to take their order interrupting their tender moment.

Ill take the chicken taco special please. Dana announced.

Uhm, Ill take the same with extra sour cream please. Alice decided on a whim.

Alice, I dont know how I feel about you right now, though I do know that I care a lot about you. I dont wanna rush into anything seeing as I dont know whats gonna happen with Tanya. I thought about what you said about rushing into things, so can you be patient with me until I figure this all out?

Of course. Ive waited this long right? Alice laughed. I do have one question though.
