What Matters
What Matters
Bette and Tina have been going threw a dry spell every since Bette became obsessed with Black Lives Matter and the movement against police brutality. Tina loved her Mocha skin beauty and supported her fully but it seemed Bette has became distance with her. It seemed she was annoyed with everything Tina said lately. Tina never could have imagined after reconciling with Bette that they would be struggling again. Tina swore she would not take being treated like she didn’t matter in the relationship again. Tina was torn apart when she learned of Bette’s affair with Candace. It had been three years since their reconciliation.
Tina: Babe, can you pick Angie up from Kit’s this evening?
Bette: Yes
Tina: Ok, thank you
Tina went in for a morning kiss but Bette turned her head and the kiss landed on Bette’s cheek.
Tina: Oh.. ok what’s up Bette?
Tina raised her hands in the air and back down slightly hard on her lap
Bette: What do you mean?
Tina’s hazel eyes staring intently into chocolate orbs.
Tina: Babe every since all the police brutality, racial tentions, and protests you have been distance. I want to know right now, what’s going on. We have not made love for weeks and you will not even allow me to kiss you on the mouth. Is it me? Does my whiteness now bother you?
Bette grabbed Tina’s hand and said shyly and like she was trying to breathe under water, ”It’s not you, believe me.
Tina: What is it then
Pirching her lips and allowing a little air to escape, Bette said, ”It’s Me
Tina looking into chocolate orbs again, ”Are you not happy with us again.”
Bette: No, it’s not us and for the record Tina you are, the most fair minded understanding person I know when it comes to what others might call my otherness but all these things going on with the police and African American men has got me really bothered.
”Babe I’m here to fight the good fight with you,” Tina said.
Bette speaking in a whisper again with a husky voice: I know
Bette’s voice really turned Tina on in that moment which really infuriated Tina.

Very …very sweet story.. and rather timely as well. I always thought that what Kit said to Bette was the absolute truth: “When Tina sees you, she doesn’t see black or white, she sees the woman she loves.” In her way, Yolanda was as judgmental about Bette and how as she carries on her life as the old white women in the grocery store grabbing their purse when they see a person of color. Yolanda was stereotyping just as the women in the grocery store.
