What Matters
”Yes, I know the majority may see your color and may unconsciously feel less threatened by you in the workplace until they meet your temper,” Tina chuckled
So true, Bette laughed with Tina
Tina: However, your charm and eye for beautiful, money making art I think would win anyone over and dear sweet intending Yolanda don’t know how proud you were of you dad’s accomplishments in art and the charm must of been inherited.
Bette: Yes Yolanda just saw me and assumed a lot not knowing anything else about my family. That’s just it Tee it’s easier for people to put me in a box when they just see me and I will admit I have let them.
Tina: Bette do you have to go around carrying a picture of your entire family to prove how black you are? Babe, I carry a picture of Angie and Us but I don’t wip it out to prove anything nor should you.
Bette: You are right Tee but I can’t just continue to just let things be as they are when I see poor black people suffering stereotyped and less fortunate than myself.
Tina: We won’t. Notice I said we won’t but I can’t help when you are pushing me away.
”Agreed..wait did you just say awhile ago you thought my dad was charming?,” Bette said with a laugh.
Tina: Well yes to some degree.
Looking puzzled Bette said, ”Really?”
Tina: Well yeah besides calling me Ms. Kennard for all those years, I knew he really liked me. He just couldn’t accept his baby girl wasn’t living the life he imagined for her.
Bette: Now looking back I wandered if he knew being black could be a hurdle for me and adding another otherness would definitely be unkind to his daughter.
Tina: Probably
”Tina Kennard-Porter when did you become so wise,” Bette said kissing Tina’s neck.
Tina: Babe I just try to lead with understanding, having an open heart and mind.
Tina smiled with the thought of Bette signature move.
Bette kissed Tina’s neck again but paused afterwards waiting for Tina’s permission to proceed.
Tina gave Bette her signature move with winking both of her eyes because she honestly didn’t know how to wink. But to Bette this was so sexy.
They kissed so passionately it took their breath away.
Tina was on top of Bette in no time. Her hands clumsly tried to open Bette’s shirt. Bette helped her feeling the need for skin on skin rush over her.
They made love for what felt like hours and now we’re laying in bed.
Bette kissed Tina so tenderly.
Bette saying in a whisper,” thank you for being you. I see your resolve, even when people assume you adopted Angie. I see your absolute desire to keep moving forward and focusing on love and treating everyone how you we would want to be treated. I see U Tina Kennard-Porter ”
I was taught Tina said, ”that it does not matter who you love as long as you have love in your life.” It’s what matters.
Tina: And babe I cant begin to know everything you are going thru but I promise to always listen and to try to reach out for you.
Bette: That’s what matters so much to me
Tina: It’s what matters. You and Angie and everything that I love, I promise.
And they sealed it with another kiss
The End

Very …very sweet story.. and rather timely as well. I always thought that what Kit said to Bette was the absolute truth: “When Tina sees you, she doesn’t see black or white, she sees the woman she loves.” In her way, Yolanda was as judgmental about Bette and how as she carries on her life as the old white women in the grocery store grabbing their purse when they see a person of color. Yolanda was stereotyping just as the women in the grocery store.
