What Time Can DoPart 3
[Bette picks up the phone and buzzes James at his desk.]
Bette: James, please clear my schedule for tomorrow. Im not sure if Ill be in or work from home.
[James stopped asking questions; Bette had not been herself for months. Bette never fully explained what happened, all he knew was that they had separated. After not hearing from Tina and Bette never bringing her up, he asked if Tina was ok. All Bette would say was that they had gone their separate ways. He knew Bette well enough to know that it should be left at that. Bette had completely changed; her appearance took a big hit. She had heavy bags under her puffy, bloodshot eyes. Her power suits began to dwindle into casual clothing every day. Her presence was the most noticeable. That and the fact that her 12 hour days became 16 hour days 6 and sometimes 7 days a week. Her confidence lacked, her presence lost its glow, so much so that Franklin even started to worry. At this point, he tries to avoid her and when she does bring something to his attention, he lets her have her way.]
James: Not a problem, anything else I can do for you?
Bette: Can you put a call into memory #5? Let me know when you get through.
James: Sure thing.
[James knew that was Tina on the phone. Bette is clearing her schedule for the first time in months and now I am calling # 5. Something was happening, something big. He just hoped it was something good, he wasnt sure if Bette could handle anything else going wrong.]
James: Your call is on line 2.
Bette: Thanks James. Oh and James, I will be leaving once I finish this call. Take the rest of the day off once you have cleared my schedule for tomorrow.
James: Good luck, I hope everything works out.
He knows something is going on, it doesnt take a genius to know that Tina hasnt called in three months and now all of a sudden she has.
Bette: (Talking fast and almost out of breath)Sorry to keep you waiting but I was desperate to talk to someone.
(Pause)
Bette: Ok, I will try to calm down and breathe. Tina called me this afternoon and wants me to meet her tonight.
(Long pause)
Bette: I was shocked and caught off guard. We havent spoken in exactly three months. But you already know that.
(Pause)
Bette: She said she needed to see me as soon as possible. We agreed on 7pm tonight at OUR spot.
(Pause)
Bette: (Sounding a little defeated)I dont know what to make of it. Thats our spot; I proposed to her there, we talked about starting our family there.
(Pause)
Bette: (Nervously answering) Im scared, I havent seen or heard from her in so long and now all of a sudden she calls. I dont know what to do.
[Bette sits there shaking her head as though someone was in the room with her as she tries not to cry.]
Bette: This is it, my one shot to convince Tina that Ive changed and still love her. I cant ***** this up.
(Pause)
Bette: (Wiping the tears from her eyes) I know and I understand, I dont like it but I know what I have to do. Thank you Dr. Mitchell for all your help. I just hope with all my heart that it works.
[Bette hung up the phone and gathered her things for the day. Tonight was either going to end badly or give her renewed faith in their relationship. Not knowing what to expect, Bette had to be prepared for both.]
Bette: (Walking out of her office)James, Im leaving now. Did you get my schedule cleared for tomorrow?
James: I pushed everything back 2 days instead of 1, just in case you dont make it in.
Bette: (Sincerely)Thank you, now get out of here and enjoy the rest of the day.
James: Bette, I hope everything works out with you and Tina.
Bette: Thanks James, me too.
