You (Part the Fifth)
That is, until Dana took her advice on being more obviously gay and decided to kiss Lara pretty thoroughly on national TV. It wasn’t like she did it intentionally, exactly, but she was so fucking happy and excited about the win that she needed to kiss someone. It ran through her mind that she’d rather be kissing Alice right now, and she hated that…so she kissed Lara deeper and harder, trying to show her how much she cared for her. Because she did, just not as much as she knew she should, and it was driving her nuts.
Lara sensed it, just like she sensed all was not well in Dana’s world. She’d always felt such a strong connection with Dana before, and now it was as if she had no way to gauge what her girlfriend was thinking and feeling. Happy as she was to finally be past the awkward stages with Alice, that wasn’t solving the deeper problems between the two of them. And it hurt. She knew Dana wasn’t doing it on purpose…hell, she couldn’t blame Dana for the way she was feeling. Still, it was painful to know that she didn’t have all of Dana’s heart. She knew she couldn’t leave, and she didn’t exactly want to…but as Dana’s face lit up upon hearing Alice’s voice over the radio, Lara knew the situation wasn’t going to be easy, and it certainly wasn’t fair. To any of them. Still, she wouldn’t be able to live with herself if she left Dana now…not while something big was happening.
A something big that Dana was doing her best to avoid. After Lara had driven the new Mercedes home (Dana had pled fatigue), they got ready for the party at the Planet. Lara tried to bring up how tired Dana looked, and was brushed off pretty quickly by Dana’s response that she had a needle biopsy on Tuesday, and they’d know then if it was anything to worry about. Which Lara supposed was fair.
Dana was touched that all her friends had watched the match, even Helena. Moira even took the time to comment on one of her volleys, which endeared her to Dana instantly. She knew her friends loved her and supported her career, but none of them really followed the sport enough to know what she was doing on the court. It was nice to talk to someone who actually knew what a volley was.
“Congratulations,” Alice said as she walked up, and Dana smiled at how hard Alice was trying to act like nothing was wrong…this time for an entirely different reason than before. It was still a little awkward for them to hug in public, but it felt good. “I’m okay,” Dana whispered into Alice’s ear before pulling away as Lara came back with the drinks. There was an awkward moment when Alice commented on the kiss seen ‘round the world, and Dana couldn’t help but blush about it. Lara looked pretty embarrassed too, so Alice decided to just walk away and leave the couple to themselves. It turned out to be a pretty good night, all things considered, especially after Carmen showed up and spun a little for Shane. Alice danced with Helena and Jenny and had more fun than she had in months, finally secure in the knowledge that whatever their problems might be (and she had a feeling they’d be pretty big ones), she and Dana were gonna be okay.
Something that Dana wasn’t as sure of, as she felt herself getting tired after two dances with Lara. Catching Alice’s eyes across the crowded club, Lara tipped her head toward Dana and shook her head sadly.

I really LOVE this story. I WISH it was S3…it’s so perfect. I just want and more and and more and it’s so sad that I know how it’s going to end. (Or at least by the show’s standard) I feel bad for Lara cause we all know she knows. Alice and Dana are meant to be, and it really sucks that Lara has to get hurt because of that. I feel for her. I don’t know how or when they are going to get together but I really hope it’s soon. They need eachother. Love like that just doesn’t end, it’s hard to ever make it go away. Although it really is awesome that they’ve become best friends again, or are at least working at it, I hope their hearts find their way back to eachother…great job, I can’t wait for the next update! You’re fabulous!
First off, I’m a little embarrassed. I can’t believe that I didn’t recognize the “bi” thing. I think I try too hard to block Season 3 from my mind as much as possible. An Easter Peep? Haha. I must say, I’ve never seen Lara that way. That cracked me up though. Great update. I really enjoyed it. The “I love you’s” seem to be slipping out a bit more freely, huh? That’s cool with me. I have to agree about the Billie Jean King comment :) I love when Dana plays tennis. I wish we could have seen more of it. I suppose it could be a little hard with Erin Daniels not actually playing tennis, and being so little. I love tennis. All this Dana and tennis talk makes me want to go play. The weather is too crappy here though. Freak snow storms in October…who would’ve thought? It cut down my tennis time. Anyway…apparently I ramble too. I love how you’re getting Helena more and more involved. It seems more realistic than what you mentioned earliar about Helena suddenly flying Dana on her private jet. I also love the fact that Alice is being so supportive for Dana, even though it’s clear that it’s painful. I’m really hoping you’re going to change the ending of season 3. I know they can’t all be “happily ever after’s”, but I’m still hoping. Keep up the great writting. I really love it, and can’t wait to see what’s going to happen.
phew!!!! im outta breath i just caught up in this story again. This is really how season 3 should go. I cant wait to you post again. Whenever youre ready to im up for it!!
Written like this, season 3 would’ve been so much better. I love it. You write it so well and I can’t wait for the next update.
Excellent update, and I love your take on moments and details we recognize on the show, very well done. Especially Dana whispering to Alice that she was OK while giving her that hug. Yes, you are definitely giving Lara waaaay more texture (especially as she senses all is not well in LaraDanaLand..) and it’s really enjoyable to read. I like the interplay between the three of them. Keep it up! PPS!
So, okay…just how far down this road are you going to go? And won’t you please consider getting them back on track before chemo starts? Really great stuff. PPS
Wow,ur a great writer babe! Im glad your going with the direction i said,( youll get the readers babe) LA here we come, better watch out ladies!!! HA PPS
another great update
Ok…I just caught up with this story. I didn’t want to relive S3 again. But after scanning this story, I caved in, read it and now I’m hooked. Although it’s sometimes still painful to see the hurt they’re going through and the awkward moments that comes out of it, I really like your take on it. I would like to imagine that this storyline was also running next to the original storyline of S3 but IC had to cut all the scnes, because there was no time or no budget to actually air it. ;)
