You (Part the Seventeenth)
Alice woke up in the dead of night to the muffled sounds of someone puking their guts out from behind the closed bathroom door. Foggy-minded and confused, she struggled to get her bearings as the retching continued. As her eyes started to adjust and Dana’s bedroom became more recognizable, she figured they’d just had a little too much to drink before walking back here from the bar. She rolled over with a shrug, hoping Dana had at least pulled her hair back before she revisited whatever she’d been drinking. This thought placated her until the orange pill bottles of varying sizes began to take shape on Dana’s bedside table.
"Shit," she muttered, waking up instantly and jumping out of bed, pausing only to throw on a bathrobe before she knocked softly on the bathroom door. There was no answer for a minute or two, and Alice could hear Dana sobbing quietly as she tried to regain a little bit of composure. "Dane? Sweetie, I’m coming in, okay?" she said, trying to sound as comforting as she could as she slowly pushed the door open.
The sight that greeted her made her eyes burn with tears. Dana looked like she was on the verge of death. She was pale as a sheet, sweating bullets and shaking as she slumped against the side of the toilet. She’d managed to make it somehow, and there was really no mess to clean up, but it was obvious that the effort had exhausted her and that she was in pain. "Aw, baby," Alice murmured as she knelt next to Dana. "It’s okay, sweetie." Of course, it wasn’t, but she had no fucking idea what else she could possibly say. On top of the pain and exhaustion Dana was showing with every breath she took, she also looked embarrassed, and that was something that Alice just couldn’t accept.
"I feel like shit, Al," Dana said haltingly, realizing even as she said it how utterly stupid it sounded. "It hurts. It really fucking hurts." And then she was crying again, hating herself for being so weak about the whole thing. It wasn’t like Alice had never seen her sick before, but she hated the fact that the treatments that were supposed to be making her better were reducing her to this…some kind of dependent, childlike specimen that couldn’t even care for herself. Hell, in spite of her natural athleticism she’d barely made it to the bathroom in time, and she was so tired and hurting so much that she wasn’t sure she’d be able to hold herself up over the bowl if another wave of nausea hit.

That was incredible muted, I agree with the others, if only season 3 had gone this way *sighs* and I’m starting to love Dana so much more in this story so I will cry and throw something at you if you kill her off, I mean it biatch :P Can’t wait for your next post xx
Wow …. awesome writing as usual.
Muted, that was just incredible. I didn’t want it to end! And I’m so glad she didn’t go on the date with Chandra, that never sat well with me when I watched s3. Anyway, this story is so well written and I sound like a broken record, but you write these characters so fn well I’m just amazed by it.
And as usual, I love the twist you gave this story as compared to the original storyline. This is how it should have been. I always hated the fact that we never got to know if Dana actually got jealous at Alice going on a date with Chandra. As a hardcore Danish fan I ofcourse always believed she was. ;) I wonder how you will continue with Dana’s sickbed and all… As you closely follow the storyline of S3, the next episode is the one where Dana dies. Whatever you will do, I at least know for sure that there will be much more ‘screentime’ in your story for Alice and (especialy) Dana than on the real show (I mean..how much screen time did Dana get in the episode where she died…I think 5 minutes is even overestimated).
Um…I’m a little scared. This was so good and slayingly (is that a word?) sad. Oh and don’t disregard the yum-ness that is the oatmeal pancake – it’s not like zucchini pancakes. Now that’s a world of – Eww! Although I do have a fondness for the zucchini. Okay I’m having a major case of thoughtstipation tonight so I’ll end this babble with – Great Chapter!
I really like your adaptation of this episode! I am impressed by how well you write these characters. Keep it up!
Aww beautiful as ever, tough part tho. You are a brill writer PPS! :)
It touched me deeply…. and I think this is the way it should have been shoot… Your writing is amazing!
