You (Part the Seventeenth)
"It looks like an infection to me…she has a high fever and her white cells are pretty high for a chemo patient, which indicates she’s trying to fight something off. We’re gonna have to take her in, if you’d like to ride along." He smiled at Alice rather sadly and wheeled the stretcher out. She followed, climbing into the back of the rig and sitting on the bench next to Dana. She held her hand and whispered sweet nothings in her ear all the way there. Dana was next to delirious by the time they arrived, and as the paramedics turned her over to the orderlies she called out for Alice in fear.
"Dana, I’m right here. Don’t worry, they’re just gonna do some tests." She glanced at the on-call doctor. "You’re keeping her in the hospital overnight?"
He glanced back at her, and from his expression she gathered that this was pretty fucking serious. "Yes. Stay here, I’ll answer your questions later," he said, not unkindly but not exactly gently.
"Dana, I’m gonna be right here. I’m not going anywhere," she called after the stretcher as it was wheeled away from here. "I’ll be right here!"
She slumped onto a hard wooden bench and stared at the floor, amazed at how quickly Dana had gotten worse and a little shocked by it. She stayed that way until she felt a warm hand on her shoulder and heard a comforting voice with a Jamaican accent speaking close to her. She realized fuzzily that the accent was connected to the hand. "Come on, honey, there’s no reason to get yourself all numb sitting on this thing. There are some nice chairs in the lounge over here behind the nurses’ station, come on in and get comfortable. Your friend is in very good hands, okay? She’ll be back with you in no time." Alice finally managed to focus on the lady, who looked incredibly friendly. Alice relaxed a little and let herself be led to the lounge.
"My name is Anna, and I’m one of the head oncology nurses. Your friend – Dana, is it? Ah, yes, the tennis player – she’ll be back here soon enough, and I’ll get to help you take care of her." Anna looked her up and down and smiled knowingly. "Don’t worry, honey, I can see how much you love her. I won’t be telling you to leave. Anything I can do to make you comfortable, you just ask me, okay? And if I’m not here, my friends Margie and Donna will do pretty much anything you ask." With that being said, she gave Alice a little hug and walked away to give her some time to digest things.
A few minutes later, Shane and Carmen made it. Anna pointed them in Alice’s direction, and Shane practically ran to the recliner where Alice was sitting, pulling her friend into her arms. "I called Helena on the way over; she’ll be here in a little bit. Al, it’s gonna be okay," Shane soothed as best she could as Alice finally broke down.

That was incredible muted, I agree with the others, if only season 3 had gone this way *sighs* and I’m starting to love Dana so much more in this story so I will cry and throw something at you if you kill her off, I mean it biatch :P Can’t wait for your next post xx
Wow …. awesome writing as usual.
Muted, that was just incredible. I didn’t want it to end! And I’m so glad she didn’t go on the date with Chandra, that never sat well with me when I watched s3. Anyway, this story is so well written and I sound like a broken record, but you write these characters so fn well I’m just amazed by it.
And as usual, I love the twist you gave this story as compared to the original storyline. This is how it should have been. I always hated the fact that we never got to know if Dana actually got jealous at Alice going on a date with Chandra. As a hardcore Danish fan I ofcourse always believed she was. ;) I wonder how you will continue with Dana’s sickbed and all… As you closely follow the storyline of S3, the next episode is the one where Dana dies. Whatever you will do, I at least know for sure that there will be much more ‘screentime’ in your story for Alice and (especialy) Dana than on the real show (I mean..how much screen time did Dana get in the episode where she died…I think 5 minutes is even overestimated).
Um…I’m a little scared. This was so good and slayingly (is that a word?) sad. Oh and don’t disregard the yum-ness that is the oatmeal pancake – it’s not like zucchini pancakes. Now that’s a world of – Eww! Although I do have a fondness for the zucchini. Okay I’m having a major case of thoughtstipation tonight so I’ll end this babble with – Great Chapter!
I really like your adaptation of this episode! I am impressed by how well you write these characters. Keep it up!
Aww beautiful as ever, tough part tho. You are a brill writer PPS! :)
It touched me deeply…. and I think this is the way it should have been shoot… Your writing is amazing!
