L-word: Definitely. Since you have mentioned that it was a real case, where do you find inspirations for your stories?
TG: I read a lot of newspapers every day. I just find that inspiration is all around us and I know it’s a good idea when I have this strong emotional reaction to it. Like the one about a young man whose father and grandfather were serial killers. The first thing I thought, “Oh my God, what if I found that out about my parents?” I would feel really weird about who I am. Or I read these papers and I find out the story that “Vanish” was based on, about the corpse that wakes up in the morgue. But the important way for me is that an idea must always strikes some really deep emotional bell for me before I can write that book.
L-word: So you start with an emotional idea and then from there you can actually see where the story will go?
TG: I can usually see approximately where it’s going. Maybe I know about the first third of the book but I don’t know how it’s going to end and don’t even always know who the bad guy is until I’ve gotten through the book.
