Orange is the New Black Fanfiction
Orange is the New Black is out on Netflix with its second season. For those who have been living off the grid, here’s the recap: Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) is a beautiful blonde haired woman in her thirties with eloquent style and a flair for the good life. Piper is sentenced to fifteen months in prison after a crime she committed a decade earlier during her wild college days comes to light. Piper’s charges came with the shocking news of her experimental days and her time dating her drug-dealing girlfriend, Alex Vause (Donna from That 70s Show, Laura Prepon). This news struck Piper’s fiance’ (Jason Biggs of American Pie) Larry the hardest.
Piper has brand new experiences in prison that would make any grandma cover her eyes. Boobs are made visible within the first five minutes of the show’s introduction and it doesn’t end there. Lesbian sex takes the cake as the most risque occurrence on the show and boy does it happen again, and again, and again. You see the insides and out of prison; drama and action and scandalous reactions as sparks fly between all of these criminal women. You see complex interactions between inmates- like Crazy Eyes and Piper in the first season; and Piper and her bunk- mates when she’s looking for a good roach in season 2. It just makes for good television.
Here are two great things about Orange is the New Black:
1. It stretches people’s perceptions about prison for good or for bad. Many people have absolutely no idea what happens in a prison setting. It helps people understand the difficult scenario of having to leave your family and losing the ones you love; especially when they’re children. It gives you insight on why people might have comitted their crimes; and examples of life lessons and introspection to give you a a little reality check. It also shows some things about prison that might be less than savory- especially when things like drugs and violence and sex and gender issues; but the truth of the issue is that these problems are all around us, and sometimes you just get thrown into places you feel you just don’t belong and you have to adapt. Other times it helps you to define what is right and wrong with the prison system. They give the prisoners responsibilities, and those responsibilities get taken advantage of, and you see conflict; and as often as not you see prison guards who are just as guilty as prison inmates.
2. It is an unbelievably witty show. There are so many interesting plot changes and twists that keep you on the edge of your seat; as you see Piper’s situation throughout the first season spiral out of control; and even into the second season, she’s constantly dealing with some kind of trouble. Each and every character in the show plays a part- most shows just focus on a few key characters and that’s that, but Orange is the New Black stretches out the plot to include everyone, because someone’s always up to something. Each of the characters have really complex situations with each other and deal with real drama; and these types of scenes have real, emotional depth that makes you feel a little better after watching it; and also makes you laugh your socks off at times.
