    Chapter 7

    Chapter 7

The next morning, Bette is making a coffee in her kitchen. She picks up her cell and places a call.

    (Tina) Ha!

(Bette smiles) Well that’s an excited greeting at this hour of the morning

(Tina laughs) Sorry, that’s the first time I’ve managed to answer my phone without Alice’s help

    Bette smiles.

(Bette) I was wanting to ask what you’re doing today. Since you mentioned you’ve organised the week off work

    (Tina) No plans, why?

(Bette) Well how would you feel about spending the day together?

    (Tina smiles) Really?

(Bette) Yes, I thought maybe we could do something fun. Take your mind off things a bit

(Tina smiles) I think that sounds great. You don’t have to work?

(Bette) I can take a day, I haven’t in forever

(Tina smiles) OK, well do you have something in mind?

    (Bette smiles) I do

    Tina laughs.

    (Tina) Top secret is it?

(Bette smiles) Can I pick you up in an hour?

    (Tina) Sure, I’ll be ready

    (Bette smiles) Great

Later, they drive together along the coast and Tina looks out the passenger window, taking in the scenery.

(Tina) How long will this drive be?

(Bette smiles) Are you trying for a clue?

    They share an affectionate glance.

    (Bette) Less than an hour

Tina nods and turns back to the view. They make a turn towards the hills and Bette glances back at her again.

(Bette) Have you worked it out yet?

    Tina smiles over at her.

    (Tina) Topanga?

Bette smiles at her and nods.

(Bette) You always loved it. I thought it might be nice to spend the day there, wander the markets, maybe try and find a familiar restaurant for lunch. It hasn’t changed all that much in the last 15 years

Tina reaches over and takes her hand.

    (Tina) Thank you

    Bette smiles over at her.

They arrive and spend the morning taking in the local markets. They wander around the various stalls, sometimes together and sometimes apart. They both enjoy taking in the relaxed atmosphere and fall easily into the easy way they have moved around this setting together so many times before.

Tina approaches Bette as she looks over a table of handmade ceramics. Bette looks up and sees Tina standing alongside her and they smile at each other as Tina joins her in looking through the pieces on the table.

    1. Hi again, katynd! :) I’ve been buried in paperwork these past few weeks but I’ve been following this interesting story from the very beginning. This has a different emotional terrain from your other stories and I applaud you for exploring these deeper landscapes. It’s like Tina went back to a default setting when she and Bette were still so in love and can’t keep their hands off each other. One wonders what series of terrible things happened that broke them apart but I hope Tina won’t be so devastated once she starts remembering them (hopefully she won’t recall every hurtful detail) and that she’ll be able to look at them from a different perspective. I hope Bette will see things from a different lens too.
Can’t wait to find out what happens next! As always, thanks a lot for writing and sharing this interesting, well-written story, katynd!❤ (Thanks also for your concern post-hurricane!:D)
