    6 Months- chapter 7

Bette awoke to her alarm sounding that it was 5am.  “Well, here we go”, she said out loud as she swung her legs off of the bed.  She showered and dressed, made coffee and ran through the lists that she had put together in her head.

At exactly 6:30, her car and driver showed up.  The driver came into the house to get all of her bags.  As soon as the last one was retrieved, Bette told him that she would meet him at the car.

She turned around and walked to the French doors that led out to the pool.  She looked at the backyard that yearned for Tina’s loving hands; she looked at the pool and with a heavy sigh, slowly pulled the drapes closed.

She walked throughout the house to be sure that she was not forgetting anything.  As she started to walk towards the front door, she slowed by the mantle.  There was the picture, just as she had placed it last night.  It looked as if it were mocking her.  “Was it?” Bette thought to herself.  She turned and started to walk away again, but thought more about it.  She looked at it one more time, reached for it and gently placed it in her bag.  She looked at the empty spot where it had been.  She would find a new place for it in New York, maybe, perhaps, she guessed.

She then resumed her path to the front door, turned one last time and with an unreadable expression on her face, opened the door and then locked it behind her.  She purposefully walked to the car where the driver was waiting by her door.  She slid into the backseat and rested her head against the headrest.  “*****”, she quietly muttered to herself.

The drive to LAX was uneventful, as was the flight to Kennedy.  Peggy had had Bette booked in first class, just as she had done the last time she came to New York when Tina was supposed to come with her.

“No!” thought Bette.  “I can not keep doing this.  I cannot associate every single ***** thing in my life to a memory with Tina.  Jesus!  Is this ever going to get any easier?” She put her head back and thought about reclining and trying to get some rest.  “Who am I kidding?” she thought to herself, “I will only think about what it is that I am trying not to think of.”
