    6 Months- chapter 7

She got her laptop out and proceeded to review documents that Peggy had had sent to her to get her familiar with the project.  Before she knew it, they were being told that they would be landing in thirty minutes.

Bette put away her computer, sat back down and this time, did close her eyes.  She knew that it was pointless to second-guess her decision, but it seemed to be so easy to do.  She knew that she had no life in LA right now, and that she had made the right decision.  “I have to have made the right decision”, Bette thought to herself.

The flight landed and as promised, as soon as she could, dialed Kit.  Kit answered on the second ring, expecting this call from her sister.

“Hey Baby girl, how was the flight?”

“Good, long but got some work done”.

“Of course you did.  You wouldn’t be you if you hadn’t”.

“So, how are things?  Where are you and what are you up to today?”

“Well, I’m actually at The Planet right now, just catching up with the girls.  But don’t worry, I came outside to get your call.”

    “Um huh”, Bette responded.

“The girls are asking about you Bette”.

    “What did you tell them?”

“Just that you have been busy and that you will be in contact soon.  Tina was there also, Bette”.

    “Oh?”

“Yeah, she doesn’t look good.  She looks defeated and tired.”

“There’s nothing I can do about that anymore.  I am sure she’ll be fine, Kit”.

“I’m guess you’re right, I just thought that I should let you know.”

“Ok Kit and thanks.  Listen, I need to go.  I’m getting in the car to go to the city.  I will call you once I get settled.  Please remember about what I said about keeping this trip to New York between us.”

“I know Baby sister, I just wanted you to know that they were asking about you”.

“Got it and thanks again.  I’ll call you soon- I promise”.

“Alright Baby girl, you do that and take care.  That’s an awfully big city.  Don’t let it swallow you up”.

Bette smiled at her sister’s comment and said, “I won’t.  I’ll talk to you soon”.

As Bette hung up, she felt for the first time that she really had done what she said that she was going to do.  She was really no longer in LA and had just hung up with one of her few ties left there.  It was a scary and yet exhilarating feeling.  The sense of dread that she had felt in the car this morning was gone.  It had been replaced by an excitement of looking forward to the unknown.  She knew at that point that she was going to be ok.  Just getting on that plane this morning had seemed like an overwhelming task, and yet, here she was, in a car on her way to her new home.

A small smile broke on her face and she realized that what she was feeling was actually a slight sense of happiness.  It had been so long that she had almost forgotten what it felt like.  It felt good.  That’s what it was, it felt really good.

Bette looked out the window of the car and saw the horizon of her new home looming in the distance.  Bette thought to herself, “Well, New York, let’s see what you have to offer, cause believe it or not, I’m ready for what you have to throw at me”.
