You break it, you replace it – Chapter 7

Bette glanced at her buzzing cell and saw Alice’s name flash on the display. She answered the call and returned her eyes to the road

“Hey Alice” Bette tired to sound upbeat but knew she was failing miserably

“Hey Bette, how are you doing?”

“Well I’d be a lot better if you were calling to tell me that Tina’s on her way to the airport as we speak” Bette found it impossible not to hope, even at this late hour

“I wish I could, I really am sorry.” Alice replied, her regret obvious

“Damn it.” Bette sighed heavily knowing that she had no choice but to accept that she was going to Paris alone

“Have you got time for a coffee before you leave?” Alice asked

“I’m on La Cienega about to cross Venice.”

“I’ll take that as a no” Alice replied flatly, understanding that Bette was well on her way to the airport

“Unless you want to come and have an unremarkable coffee at LAX I’m afraid the answer is no. Can we catch up when I get back?” Bette offered

“Yeah OK” Alice debated whether to get into the details of her conversation with Tina or just leave it until Bette returned from Paris. Bette waited for Alice to continue the conversation but nothing was said.

“Something on your mind?” Bette prompted

    “Yeah…I…”

“Listen, I’m sorry but I’ve got to go. The traffic is ***** this morning, I swear half the people in this city are suicidal. I’ll call you back when I get to the airport” Bette offered

“OK” Alice was silently relieved, this gave her more time to prepare what she was trying to tell Bette, the last thing she wanted to do was make things worse.

Bette ended the call and focused her full attention on the traffic.

An hour later she had survived check-in, the security check-point and now seated herself at Gate 26 waiting for the flight to be announced. She reached into her handbag and retrieved her cell phone. Finding Alice’s number at the top of the address book she pressed the send button.

    “Hey” Alice answered

“Hey, I’m really sorry I had to go like that before. This idiot limo driver was on a mission to take out someone and I just didn’t want it to be me.”
