You break it, you replace it – Chapter 7

“Tina, baby why are you doing this to us? Alice just called me and your game is up. I know why you’re letting me go to Paris alone and it’s madness. I love you, I want you, I choose you. So please stop pushing me away if it’s not what you want.” At this point the enormity of Tina’s sacrifice hit Bette and yet again she found herself in tears, her voice wavering with emotion “I can’t believe that you can still put my happiness ahead of your own after all I’ve done. You continue to amaze me Tina Kennard. I’ve got to go or I’ll miss the flight. Baby I love you and I’ll call you from Paris, we really need to talk”

Bette switched off her cell and threw it back in her bag. She took a moment to wipe the tears from her face and check her appearance. Gathering her belongings she strode up to the gate and presented the airline employee with her boarding pass. The lady processed the ticket and handed it back to Bette, wishing her a pleasant flight. Bette hesitated for a moment entertaining the thought of not going Paris but quickly put it out of her mind.

“It’s only four more days” She told herself while walking down the aerobridge. There was still a long road ahead of them and what if Alice was wrong about Tina? Bette didn’t allow herself to trust what Alice had said, she had to hear it from Tina.

“May I see you boarding pass” A steward asked Bette as she reached the aircraft door.

Bette smiled politely as she displayed her boarding pass.

“Thank-you Ms Porter, please take the far aisle and you’re in row fifteen”

Bette followed the instruction and moved on towards her designated seat.

Tina sat at Alice’s kitchen table staring into her coffee. The sickening feeling of regret began to gnaw at her heart somewhere around 4:00am and became steadily worse as the morning dragged on. By 7:00am it was all she could do to keep herself from calling Bette. To tell Bette that she needed a ride to the airport because today she had to catch a flight to Paris. At 8:45 she knew that Bette would be somewhere in the check-in line, she was religious about getting to check-in two hours before departure.
