    The Set Up (19)

Distracted momentarily from her computer, Bette was brought back to the memory of Tina’s desk. The blond’s desk had looked different than hers – somewhat loving, even. Bette remembered in particular one picture frame with a younger Angelica in Tina’s lap. They were both giggling like the mischievous girls they were, and Bette just smiled as she closed her eyes and thought back to the image. But when she opened her eyes again, the smile dropped. As she looked out to her desk, it just seemed empty. She felt empty, too.

Tina moving gently in her sleep had Bette smiling again instinctively, wishing she could capture that moment. She looked around her office, surveying her shelves to see if she’s brought her camera in the other day. She smirked when she spotted it, but then decided against taking any pictures. She didn’t want to wake Tina, who seemed truly overwhelmed and resting necessarily on the couch.

Finally, Bette forced herself to focus once again, typing aimlessly. A knock on the door jolted her from her typing, and she looked up, trying to muster a smile. “Come in.”

Angelica pushed the door open to let herself in. “I’m done your painting.” Then she noticed her mother asleep on the couch, and she looked over to Bette again. “Is my mom okay?”

“She was just tired,” Bette smiled, getting up from her desk. “Fell asleep about two minutes after she got in here.”

Angelica watched the loving way Bette chuckled at the sight, and then she looked back to her mother again. She watched Bette cover Tina with a long, fashionable black trench coat. She’s like a fashion expert. Angelica was often amazed by Bette’s artistic choices.

“It gets a little cold in here,” Bette explained, touching the side of Tina’s face. She wanted Angelica to see that she didn’t have any hesitations about loving the girl’s mother. There was nothing wrong with the way she felt.
Angelica stood strong, “She told me she loves you.”

Bette paused in her hunched position, looking over to the child, each just staring at each other for a moment. “I love her too, you know.”

Angelica nodded, wringing her hands together behind her back. She couldn’t find the words she was searching for – her emotions taking her over. What did she feel about Bette in all seriousness? What did she think about Bette staying in her mother’s life? Being in hers?
