    Why Do I Love You?

“Therese Belivet,” she answered softly, noting the firm grip and masculine hand as they shook. His grey-blue eyes were twinkly and his mass of dark, wavy hair, cut neatly, made her think of a dashing swashbuckling dark Irishman of yore, for some reason.

Brad shifted in his feet behind her, having caught up with them. Therese turned, and hooked her arm around Brad’s to drag him up into their circle.  “Oh, Brad, I’m sorry.”

She smiled at him. “Meet my friend Pernille Easton and her fiancé David Parish II.”

“Um… Bradley Ellsworth,” Brad said, introducing himself, after a few quick attempts to clear his dry throat. He shook the offered hands.  The David Parish II? Of THAT New York?

“P, I’m famished and cold. Why don’t we take this to a café or something?” David asked, noticing that Therese seemed to be chilled, and was rubbing her bare hands together.

    He pulled his gloves off.

    “Hotel Albert, dear?” Pernille asked.

David offered his gloves to Therese as he answered, “It’s a bit of a hike, but they do have good food, there. Plus an interesting clientele!”

“No … please take these, Therese,” he added as Therese made to politely refuse the offered gloves.

Pernille smiled gratefully at him as Therese continued to protest. She took the gloves and grabbed one of her friend’s hands and started to slip a glove on. “Therese, please.  I know you weren’t prepared to be out this long in the cold.  I’d hate for you to return to Carol with ice-cold hands because of me!”

Therese stopped protesting, figuring it was more gracious to do so than to keep politely refusing the offered gloves.

“I promise to get these back to you David,” she said quietly after Pernille had slipped the other one on, noting how soft, supple, and warm the gloves were.

He waved his hands, mouthing she could take her time doing so.

Pernille hooked an arm around one of Therese’ while gripping one of David’s now bare hands in her free hand. With a laugh, David motioned to Brad that he could walk next to him as the foursome turned as one to walk down the broad sidewalk of the bustling avenue.

“So, Therese, David and I talked and we want to ask you if you will agree to take the pictures during our wedding?” Pernille announced without warning.

    1. There is more😉 A lot more! When I think of Carol I imagine her in Chanel, as she embodies one of the best quotes of Mademoiselle Chanel, “A woman has to be two things: classy and fabulous.” That’s Carol, right? And when I think of Therese I think of her as an Yves Saint Laurent muse, when YSL was the King of couture. These two present so well as characters, and inhabit such a richly interesting and authentic time and world, so unlike the flat and kitschy one of today (sometimes, what passes for class and quality these days is perplexing, right?), that one can’t help but be inspired. I wish I had the time to write.

Not so sure that others on the site share this view, though, based on readership.

Still, thanks, @Jacky, for setting aside one corner of the site to this world and time, and story, of Therese and Carol. Perhaps the style of that world alone will be enough to draw people in at some point. Will try to post soon.
