Best Thing That’s Ever Happened To Me

“Of course, I remember you, Jo.  How could you have ever imagined that I’d forget you?”  Becca whispered under her breath, as if addressing the hand that held her wrist, then drew her eyes up, at last.  She must have spoken more loudly than she thought, since Jo was smiling at her, and those warm, blue eyes held her green-grey ones steadily, muting the party noise around them to an indistinct background hum.

“I’d hoped that you hadn’t.  Forgotten me, that is.”

In her mind, Jo’s voice began to resemble a waterfall echoing in the background of a serene forest scene again.  Fuck!  Why can’t I help myself when it comes to her?

Becca shook her head lightly from side to side, at first, striving mightily for the nonchalance that Jo presented, then she offered her cheek to those warm, soft lips that were descending quickly.  “You just caught me by surprise, that’s all.”  She hated that she was breathing in and out erratically, in anticipation of feeling Jo’s kiss burn against her skin, again, however chastely given, after all these years.   Like a damn high school freshman waiting for a kiss from her crush!

“Liar,” Jo whispered before lifting her head.  Great.  She can sense you’re nervous just being with her.  Becca imagined catching a mocking smile that teased at the edges of a mouth she stared at hungrily, and it took half-a-second before Becca realized Jo had said something else.  “I saw you when you arrived, and I think you saw me, too.  Then I thought you’d left with the tall red-head you came in with, but I’m glad to see that you hadn’t.”

“What’s that?” Becca motioned with her hand to her ear as if to indicate that she could hardly hear Jo.

The mocking smile turned into a chuckle.  “I said I know you saw me earlier.  Anyway, let’s talk somewhere else.  We can’t hear each other in this place.  There’s so much to talk about.  I want to know how you’ve been.  I know that you didn’t say anything the last time we saw each other. ..”

A feeling of exasperation came over Becca as she realized that the easy familiarity they’d slipped into and the hot vibe that sparked immediately between them remained as strong as ever, despite their years-long separation, and the coldness that followed their train station parting.

      • Thanks,

Had to get it out of my head.

U, on the other hand, are awesome. I see you flex there, with Gentleman Jack. I mean, what can’t you do?

You do the best stuff here, Blackbird.

        • Hey Skydancer, Nice to be in touch again. What of yours should I read tonight or whenever you get this request? Presently, just so you’ll know how to guide me to the stories you think I’d enjoy, I’m in the headspace of being on the edge of a story about to birth. It’s a tale about Anne Lister’s watch and how she behaves with, or toward it. The watch has power. It came from someplace special and came especially to her. For all those reasons and more I’d like to know Anne Lister’s watch’s origin story,

My sincere thanks for your compliment on my Gentleman Jack series. I’ve been off writing many other types of things and have been away from even thinking about fanfiction until, as Anne Lister might say, “Good Lord.”

My “Good Lord” moment was when the characters hooked me during episode three of Gentleman Jack.

Okay, recommendations of what of yours I should read.

Be well, Skydancer. The moon is out tonight.

          Blackbird

    1. Skydancer, Wonderful narration. Vivid view into Becca’s pain. Eager for a glimpse into her and Jo’s magical train ride. Great beginning!

      • Thanks, took a while to get it together.

Yup, you guessed it. The train ride was and will be the piece de resistance of this whole thing, in my mind, that I found that I could not not write down.

        Hope all is well!

    2. Skydancer, you’ve written some wonderful stories over the years but, this is stellar. Thanks for sharing. Can hardly wait for more. Thanks for posting,
