Best Thing That’s Ever Happened To Me

Becca’s smile became wistful.  “And you promised to take me to your winter hideaway..”

Jo nodded slowly.  “I did, didn’t I?  Well, as a matter of fact …”

Just then, unnoticed by Jo and Becca, a trio that had taken the stage began to slowly strum their instruments, looking like they were about to start a set.

With an impish smile, Jo stood up from the couch, reluctantly letting go of Becca’s hand.  “You never did hear me sing, right?”

As Becca’s eyes widened, she added, “I’ll tell them it was your idea.”

“Here?  Now?”  Becca called out, shocked not only by the sudden change in Jo’s mood, but also by Jo’s temerity to try singing in front of a crowd like this.

Jo ignored her, and bounded up the stage.  She whispered something to the guitarist of the trio, who looked over at Becca, and nodded his understanding at Jo, as he handed the blonde his guitar.  He motioned to the other two to search for the songsheet that Jo was prepping to sing.

What the fuck is she doing??

Jo found a comfortable position on the high chair, and started strumming the guitar, adjusting the knobs as she spoke into the mic, “Good evening girls and boys, the trio here will be singing their set in a bit, but before they did so, I asked them whether I could sing someone special a song that puts into words what I wanna say …”

Someone shouted, “Does your singing voice sound as good as your speaking voice?”

Jo grinned in his direction and nodded.  “I’m told it’s even better.”

“Go for it!  And you look good up there.  Nice jacket!” another called out, sounding a little drunk.

“Thanks … so, I was just about to say … um … you know how sometimes in life, for reasons that made complete sense at the time, you did something that you thought was supposed to help someone, but it ended up hurting them instead?”  She continued strumming, and smiled back at the two others in the trio and nodded, as if to signal that she was about to start.

“I did that last month!” someone in one of the couches closest to the stage moaned aloud.

      • Thanks,

Had to get it out of my head.

U, on the other hand, are awesome. I see you flex there, with Gentleman Jack. I mean, what can’t you do?

You do the best stuff here, Blackbird.

        • Hey Skydancer, Nice to be in touch again. What of yours should I read tonight or whenever you get this request? Presently, just so you’ll know how to guide me to the stories you think I’d enjoy, I’m in the headspace of being on the edge of a story about to birth. It’s a tale about Anne Lister’s watch and how she behaves with, or toward it. The watch has power. It came from someplace special and came especially to her. For all those reasons and more I’d like to know Anne Lister’s watch’s origin story,

My sincere thanks for your compliment on my Gentleman Jack series. I’ve been off writing many other types of things and have been away from even thinking about fanfiction until, as Anne Lister might say, “Good Lord.”

My “Good Lord” moment was when the characters hooked me during episode three of Gentleman Jack.

Okay, recommendations of what of yours I should read.

Be well, Skydancer. The moon is out tonight.

    1. Skydancer, Wonderful narration. Vivid view into Becca’s pain. Eager for a glimpse into her and Jo’s magical train ride. Great beginning!

      • Thanks, took a while to get it together.

Yup, you guessed it. The train ride was and will be the piece de resistance of this whole thing, in my mind, that I found that I could not not write down.

        Hope all is well!

    2. Skydancer, you’ve written some wonderful stories over the years but, this is stellar. Thanks for sharing. Can hardly wait for more. Thanks for posting,
