    Final Chapter

I frowned, and answered, slowly, “A couple of times, maybe, but they happened after pretty traumatic events. I had a bad one a few weeks after my parents died suddenly in an accident. And I had another one after my … um … partner died.”

“Uh huh,” Dr. Brooks murmured, to acknowledge what I’d said as she continued to tap on the tablet.

I looked uncertainly around the room. Olivia and Bai exchanged a look, and then Olivia asked the doctors, “Can we have someone talk to her first? Someone she might know or recognize from their voice?”

“Of course, of course,” Dr. Brooks said quickly. She gave me a quick smile before stepping away from my bedside. The two doctors conferred in a far end of the room while Olivia called someone, talked briefly into the phone, and then handed it to me.

“Hey, Aerin,” I heard Brom’s voice come online. “I’m glad to know you’re awake.”

    “Brom?” I asked.

“Yup. Listen, I’m in the middle of something right now … but I understand from Olivia that you have a problem remembering things. I wish I could talk some more but I have to help take care of things that led to you ending up there, actually. Olivia and Bai are there to help you, ok? If you’ll need anything, don’t hesitate to ask them to call me,” he said in a rapid-fire voice.

I swallowed, and asked him, “Can you call when you can, then? I need …”

He cut in, “I’ll have Jules call you shortly, how about that? I really have to go, Aerin. But you’re in good hands. And in the safest place you can be, right now, ok?”

He hung up before I could respond.

The four women looked at me expectantly, and I tried to crack a smile.

I blew out a breath, and said slowly, “Um… he had to go. But you asked the last thing I remember, right?”

    They all nodded.

“I can remember images of Hong Kong, I think. And having dinner with some people … clients, I think. And then I remember packing in a rush, and hopping into the car service that would take me to the airport …”

I squeezed my eye, frowning in concentration. I tried to force myself to remember more, but could not call up anything else.
