Final Chapter
I blew out a frustrated breath. “And that’s the last thing I remember.”
“Do you remember Las Vegas? Or anything in LA?” Olivia asked gently.
I shook my head, and bit my lip.
“Ooo-kay,” Dr. Brooks said as she wrote a few more things on the tablet.
She looked at Olivia and Bai. “I take it that Las Vegas and LA are more recent? The memories of Hong Kong are …”
“Under a week ago, maybe,” Bai answered. “Based on what we know…”
A week ago? So I’ve been to Vegas and LA since then? Why?
“What’s wrong with me?” I asked Dr. Brooks desperately.
Olivia’s phone rang just then, and she exchanged a look with Bai. “New York phone number,” she said.
“That must be my friend, Jules,” I said.
So Olivia swiped at the screen and handed me the phone.
“Aerin!Aerin!Areyoualright?Whatthehellhappenedtoyou?Doyouwantmetoflyoutthere?” Jules fired off a fusillade of questions without pause, her words strung together like one whole word.
“Jules! Calm down would you?” I found myself asking her, ironically adopting a more placid voice than the one I’d just used when I’d asked what was wrong with me.
“Calm down?! Calm down?!” she exclaimed. I heard Diane’s voice in the background interrupt the rest of what she was apparently going to say.
And then I heard Diane’s voice. As always, she seemed the cooler one under stress, and I felt better when she asked, “Honey, how are you feeling?”
“I think I got into some kind of accident or something,” I started, “And I’ve got some injuries, but not life-threatening.”
“Injuries?” she asked, her voice broke slightly
“But I was treated for them, don’t worry, Diane,” I added hurriedly. “The thing is … I can’t seem to remember anything since I left Hong Kong …”
“Nothing in LA or Vegas?” her voice was more worried now.
I shook my head and then sighed. “No,” I said quietly.
I could hear her and Jules confer, and then, Jules’ voice came on, “Aerin, I’m taking the first flight I can catch to be with you, ok? Don’t worry about anything, honey.” She sounded less panicked. Diane had probably gotten on her case, and asked her to focus on the immediate need at hand.
I blew out a breath. Knowing Jules was coming over was a relief, I had to admit.
