    Nobis Pacem Chapter 8

“Who would have thunk it? Damn 70s and 80s shit’s got her rocking already!” Olivia added, and then squeezed my forearm affectionately.

“Head’s up! I think someone’s about to join the party,” Jack said urgently. His voice cut through the low-key laughter floating through our ear pieces.

“Don’t turn around,” Bai said firmly as she guessed correctly that I’d automatically swiveled my head to look at the curtains that masked the door that allowed people to enter this particular VIP box.

Olivia gripped my elbow briefly, “Sorry we teased you earlier. You were doing fine. Remember no …”

“No sudden movements,” I cut in and blew out my breath. “Got it.”

Jack was right, the relatively sparse group of people in the VIP box was about to expand.

After the high-spirited song, there was an unscheduled break in the concert to fix something onstage. During the lull, a heavy-set man pushed past the curtains of the door and rumbled down the steps that led to the front row seats. He moved to the middle of the row and sat.

We were sitting a couple of rows behind, but the row in front of us was empty, so there was nothing but a row of chairs between me and the man.

The main target, a Mr. Guerrero, had been sitting in the group of chairs one aisle over, and in the front row also, in a seat furthest from the aisle. He hadn’t asked Allegra to fix him up with a date tonight, but he wasn’t alone. There were about six men surrounding him, two seated next to him, closer to the aisle, three in the row behind him, and one behind the three, furthest from the aisle also.

Apart from Mr. Guerrero and his party, and the three of us, there were three couples scattered around, mostly behind us, and in the same group of seats we were seated in.

Jack was standing in the back of the VIP box walking from one corner to the other.

Mr. Guerrero had entered the VIP box about five minutes before the concert started, and he’d been talking into his cell as he made his way to his seat, so we hadn’t even exchanged glances from the time the concert started ‘til now.
