Nobis Pacem Chapter 8
I frowned and pursed my lips.
He turned to look at the man he’d been talking to for much of the past twenty minutes.
“Samuel, this is Aerin Palmer,” he said quickly, and then swiveled around to look at me.
“I apologize if that came out rather rudely,” he said, clasping his hands together and tapping them against his chest. “My security team did a rather good job of putting some background information together about people in this box tonight, and I must confess I read through your file with great interest.”
“Still,” I started to say, with real irritation.
“Yes … of course. My apologies, again. All public information, I assure you,” he added.
Samuel watched us with a bemused smile.
He reached across to clap Mr. Guerrero on the shoulder and growled, “I think you should do something more than apologize, Miguel. The lady is right to be annoyed at your implicit invasion of her privacy!”
“Then I invite you to kindly join us for a drink, Ms. Palmer. And allow me to donate a nice round sum in your name to the charity tonight, please,” Mr. Guerrero responded.
He raised his hand to call one of the men who were surrounding him earlier over. He asked the man to arrange for a bottle of Dom Perignon to be brought over.
Jack talked to me through the earpiece, “Keep your cool, Aerin. You’re doing a great job. Olivia and Bai picked up most of what those guys talked about. Whatever they’re planning will probably go down tonight, after the concert.”
Mr. Guerrero’s man returned and whispered something in his ear. He, in turn, looked at me and Samuel and exclaimed, “I’m sorry, but we can’t be served in this box. We need to leave and go to the bar. Would you both care to join me ….”
“Join them, ladies,” SSA Black spoke into my ear piece, distracting my attention from what Mr. Guerrero was saying. “He may pull the exchange now.”
“No! Aerin stays in the box,” Jack protested swiftly.
From Mr. Guerrero’s arched eyebrows, and Samuel’s questioning look, it was clear one of them had asked me a question.
“Umm… Mr. Guerrero,” I started, licking my lips.
“Miguel, please,” he said at the same time that SSA Black hissed into the ear piece. “No, Jack, she goes. She was the one Guerrero invited for the drink, and Olivia and Bai won’t be able to pick things up if Aerin doesn’t join.”
