    Nobis Pacem Chapter 1

    Aerin, over two months later

I added another log to the fire that was roaring in the fireplace near the center of the living room. Sparks flew as I poked at the logs that had nearly burnt out.

“Aerin, honey, will you please eat something?” Diane asked as she walked in carrying a tray that held a bowl of soup and a basket of bread. She laid the tray down carefully on the coffee table in front of the overstuffed leather sofa that faced the roaring fire. I looked over my shoulder at her and smiled when she walked next to me and kissed the top of my hair. “Please eat something,” she whispered.

Jules walked in with another tray, carrying a pot of tea and several cups. “D, are you swinging by here after work tomorrow or are you going to Bette and Tina’s straightaway?” she asked.

Diane pulled out her phone to check her calendar.

I could hear them over my shoulder as they went back and forth about their plans for the rest of the day and tomorrow and took that as a signal that I could tune out for a moment.

As I stared at the leaping tongues of the roaring fire I tended my thoughts drifted away from my friends’ conversation to those that involved me and the sexy, caramel-blonde neighbor. I felt certain that she was enjoying our time together, and we were clearly growing closer. Chris was coming over every night, and spent most of her weekends with me. It had become a thing with us – she came over after work, sometimes directly, if she stayed late, or if she returned home at a reasonable hour, after she’d refreshed herself, tuned work out, and changed out of her suit. Then we’d fixed dinner or ordered in, talking about everything, and nothing.

I noticed that she’d shut her phones while she was with me in my apartment, or while we took long walks in the Park. I’d only heard her get on the phone twice, and she was careful to let me know that those calls had been highly, unavoidably, urgent. Leaving all her tech behind during our walks, or out of sight while we sat next to the fire in my apartment, left her unencumbered by tethers to her office and the rest of the world, really, and focused on us; happily, it seemed to me. I knew she looked forward to these walks; we agreed that when the winter passed, we would start running around the park together, too.

      • Here in spirit. But this is about a few special L words that play out in a couple’s life in another part of town. In the fringes of the world of the series I’ve been writing; but different. Hope you like it.

    1. Will try this again. Left a message about 4:00 this morning and something happened, it’s not posted. My message was to thank you for posting such a beautiful love story. And that I hope this story will be continued we would like to know what happens to Aerin in the future. Thanks for sharing.

    2. Dainty, Hellbent, and new friends: thanks for the comments. Honestly: was tough to pull this together, but it was worth it. Am v glad you liked it. Ok. I hear you. It may take a while for an update on her story, but it will be coming.

      • Well this was a pleasant surprise. I am always seeking an episode from your creativity. So much, I had to buy a smaller electronic device so that I might read your input on the go. Now, for me buying another electronic anything is saying a lot. I am one of the “dial phone” “get up and change the channel” “do not Text me and expect an answer” old school DIE HARD. But, your writing genius persuaded me to become a mobile reader at my neighborhood “coffee house.” Please continue to write

    3. Beautiful story. I could feel Aerin’s struggle. I would love to read about the 18 months in between their first time and Chris’ final moments. I sure it would be moving.
