Nobis Pacem Chapter 1
Although Aerin had given me keys to her place, I thought I should try knocking first, in case she was busy or something. No matter how many times she’d assured me that it would be alright with her if I used the keys she’d given me to enter her apartment, I felt funny about doing so. I mean, it was still her place, right? From the looks of it, it was her sanctuary, too, especially that part of the living room where her favorite fireplace was located.
Aerin’s palatial apartment had about six fireplaces, as far as I could tell, including one in her room, but a fireplace near the center of the living room was the one she lit up more than the others.
I didn’t think we were at a stage wherein I could feel comfortable about entering her sanctuary without her permission. So I gave her a call as I stood outside her door.
“Hey!” a chirpy greeting from that throaty voice floated into my ear. “Hi there,” I answered, trying to sound cool, while calming a case of the butterflies. “Are you at that party you talked about possibly going to?”
“Um … no actually. I begged off. I’m at home.”
“You?”
I was conflicted about being happy that she was home, but sad that she still hadn’t gone to see those friends. Happy was winning. I fought to suppress a smile and lightness in my voice, “I’m standing outside your door.”
“What?! Why not come in?”
A pause. “That’s if you want to, of course.” I felt my tummy do flip flops.
I laughed. “Don’t be silly. Of course I want to. I just wanted to check first where you were –“
She interrupted me, “Chris, I’ve told you a hundred times. Just use the damn key, will you?”
I decided to parry that. “Well, you never use your key to my place, so –“
I heard splashing sounds, and then other background noises of metal scraping against something.
“Oh, is that what this is about? My not using my key to your place?” she asked, in a somewhat challenging tone.
“I’m not going to embarrass you by asking how many times you’ve used it,” I responded.
“You just did,” she said drily.

Bette and tina????
Here in spirit. But this is about a few special L words that play out in a couple’s life in another part of town. In the fringes of the world of the series I’ve been writing; but different. Hope you like it.
What a beautiful story! Your writing is such a treat to read as you evoke every emotion.
Will try this again. Left a message about 4:00 this morning and something happened, it’s not posted. My message was to thank you for posting such a beautiful love story. And that I hope this story will be continued we would like to know what happens to Aerin in the future. Thanks for sharing.
What an amazing story ! So glad I stumbled upon this treasure !
Sad and sweet -but you said it complete.
Dainty, Hellbent, and new friends: thanks for the comments. Honestly: was tough to pull this together, but it was worth it. Am v glad you liked it. Ok. I hear you. It may take a while for an update on her story, but it will be coming.
Well this was a pleasant surprise. I am always seeking an episode from your creativity. So much, I had to buy a smaller electronic device so that I might read your input on the go. Now, for me buying another electronic anything is saying a lot. I am one of the “dial phone” “get up and change the channel” “do not Text me and expect an answer” old school DIE HARD. But, your writing genius persuaded me to become a mobile reader at my neighborhood “coffee house.” Please continue to write
Beautiful story. I could feel Aerin’s struggle. I would love to read about the 18 months in between their first time and Chris’ final moments. I sure it would be moving.
