    Nobis Pacem Chapter 1

I poked at the fresh logs that I’d lit up. Baxter, my parents’ loyal butler, had set me up with a variety of logs, and these were the ones from pine trees. I used another type of pine as tinder, and the smell from both was elevating.

My phone rang and vibrated, hopping around on the floor next to me. From the sound of it, I knew it was Jules.

“Hi,” I said, thumbing the screen.

“Hey, sunshine! We just wanted to know how you were doing,” Jules said. “Bette and Tina really want to see you come around one day, by the way.”

I could hear shouts in the background that supported what Jules had just said.

“Please thank, them, Jules. And I’m sorry that I keep begging off. Actually, until two hours or so ago, I was just about ready to call you all to see if we could have brunch or something on Sunday.”

“Wow, really?” Jules said excitedly. I could tell that she’d told the people around her about what I’d just said because I heard shouts of, “Great!” “Of course!” “Where; what time?”

But after a slight pause, Jules asked, “Wait, did something happen that changed your mind?”

I stared at the leaping tongues of the fire, and gave the logs another poke. I don’t know how long I’d remained silent, when –

“Aerin! Aerin!” I heard Jules cut into my thoughts sharply. If she’d been here, I imagined she’d have snapped her fingers, too.

    “What happened?” she asked urgently.

I could hear Diane in the background asking her something.

This was the last thing I wanted. Turn everything I’d just gone through with Chris into a group discussion topic.

“If you want us to talk about this, Jules, I prefer we do this where you’re some place quiet, ok?” I said quietly.

I heard Jules murmur something, and, less than a minute later, think I heard a door or something, shut.

“Okay, it’s just me on my side, Aerin. Is Chris with you?” Jules asked soon after.

“No, she isn’t. I’m by myself, in front of the fireplace.”

    Jules sighed. “Is it bad?”

Tears began to form and flow. After a minute, I murmured through my sniffles, “Yeah, it’s bad.”

      • Here in spirit. But this is about a few special L words that play out in a couple’s life in another part of town. In the fringes of the world of the series I’ve been writing; but different. Hope you like it.

    1. Will try this again. Left a message about 4:00 this morning and something happened, it’s not posted. My message was to thank you for posting such a beautiful love story. And that I hope this story will be continued we would like to know what happens to Aerin in the future. Thanks for sharing.

    2. Dainty, Hellbent, and new friends: thanks for the comments. Honestly: was tough to pull this together, but it was worth it. Am v glad you liked it. Ok. I hear you. It may take a while for an update on her story, but it will be coming.

      • Well this was a pleasant surprise. I am always seeking an episode from your creativity. So much, I had to buy a smaller electronic device so that I might read your input on the go. Now, for me buying another electronic anything is saying a lot. I am one of the “dial phone” “get up and change the channel” “do not Text me and expect an answer” old school DIE HARD. But, your writing genius persuaded me to become a mobile reader at my neighborhood “coffee house.” Please continue to write

    3. Beautiful story. I could feel Aerin’s struggle. I would love to read about the 18 months in between their first time and Chris’ final moments. I sure it would be moving.
