Nobis Pacem Chapter 1
Or –
“Do you want me to go with you to see the doctors tomorrow?” her voice cut through the self-doubts that were beginning to crawl all over my wrecked emotional landscape.
“I want us to think about all of this, Aerin,” I said in response, not really answering the question, but answering the more immediate one. The one about whether or not there could be an “us.” I noticed that I now used a voice much heavier than I’d been using with her.
But I was tired, and realized that, subconsciously, the right way for us, if there were to be an “us,” would be to let her in on exactly how I was feeling at the moment she wanted to talk about something. I couldn’t afford to keep up a pretense with people, especially with someone I loved. I would need to conserve all of my energies to battle what could lie ahead. I had no idea, yet, what those test results meant. But I knew that this time, there were even odds that I may not well survive a battle like the one I’d waged seven years ago. I’d heard things along those lines from enough cancer patients who’d shared such hard-won wisdom, that if the disease recurred, it would be vicious.
“Fuck,” Aerin exclaimed softly to no one or about anything, in particular.
To this point I’d been staring into the fireplace. I looked over briefly at her, and returned to gaze at the fire. I saw that it was beginning to die out.
I didn’t check on my watch, but that seemed a pretty telling indicator that it had gotten late.
I stood, intending to pick up our goblets, and the tray that I’d used earlier to carry various pieces of cheese and water crackers and grapes. We’d consumed everything earlier that evening, enjoying the fire, talking easily, feeding each other, falling ever deeper in love. Only empty goblets and an empty tray remained on the table now.
As I finished rinsing out the goblets over the kitchen sink, and resting them on the unique rack I’d gotten for my special glassware, I felt her arms encircle my waist again. I hugged her arms closer to my body, not knowing if this was goodbye, or-

Bette and tina????
Here in spirit. But this is about a few special L words that play out in a couple’s life in another part of town. In the fringes of the world of the series I’ve been writing; but different. Hope you like it.
What a beautiful story! Your writing is such a treat to read as you evoke every emotion.
Will try this again. Left a message about 4:00 this morning and something happened, it’s not posted. My message was to thank you for posting such a beautiful love story. And that I hope this story will be continued we would like to know what happens to Aerin in the future. Thanks for sharing.
What an amazing story ! So glad I stumbled upon this treasure !
Sad and sweet -but you said it complete.
Dainty, Hellbent, and new friends: thanks for the comments. Honestly: was tough to pull this together, but it was worth it. Am v glad you liked it. Ok. I hear you. It may take a while for an update on her story, but it will be coming.
Well this was a pleasant surprise. I am always seeking an episode from your creativity. So much, I had to buy a smaller electronic device so that I might read your input on the go. Now, for me buying another electronic anything is saying a lot. I am one of the “dial phone” “get up and change the channel” “do not Text me and expect an answer” old school DIE HARD. But, your writing genius persuaded me to become a mobile reader at my neighborhood “coffee house.” Please continue to write
Beautiful story. I could feel Aerin’s struggle. I would love to read about the 18 months in between their first time and Chris’ final moments. I sure it would be moving.
