    Nobis Pacem Chapter 1

“Joe?” I could hear her call out through the open door to our bedroom. “I think you guys will be jazzed by what I’ve arranged for to-day!”

I smiled, despite myself. I was still clutching the bundle of scarves Joe had given me when they both entered the bedroom.

My breath caught, for the umpteenth time, at the beauty and vivacity of my lover – yes, lover. I hadn’t agreed to her repeated entreaties to get married, and fobbed it off to the illness. When she pressed I tried to explain to her that she was young enough to be able to move on and find someone else when the time came. And when she did, I’d told her the thing I wanted most was for that marriage to be the one that would last her for the rest of her (deservedly) happy life. Aerin still didn’t understand this line of thinking, though –

She saw the tangle of scarves clutched in my bony hands. “Can’t find the one with midnight blue – your eye color – and the full spectrum of light blues?” she asked with a smile.

I pursed my lips, and, out of the corner of my eye, saw Joe’s despondent expression. So I decided to own it, “My fault, baby. I couldn’t remember where … um …. Casey had left it after it returned from the cleaners.”

Aerin shook her head. “No … it’s my fault. I’m the one who packed it away, because I knew you’d want to wear it today.”

She walked over to me, bent over, and gave me a long, wet kiss on the lips. I felt myself stir. I don’t know why our kisses continue to hold an attraction for her, but I’ll take them while she continues to want to give them!

“Sorry about that, honey.” She strode quickly into the walk-in closet, and emerged a few seconds later with the scarf.

“Do you want to wear it now or later?” she asked solicitously as she walked closer to me.

I tugged absentmindedly on the wig, which scratched on my scalp sometimes.

“Now, I think,” she suggested. She gave it to me while she gently tugged the other scarves from my hands. She turned around with a saucy bounce to her hip, knowing I was looking, and then called out, “C’mon Joe, let’s give our beauty some privacy while she gets herself ready.”

      • Here in spirit. But this is about a few special L words that play out in a couple’s life in another part of town. In the fringes of the world of the series I’ve been writing; but different. Hope you like it.

    1. Will try this again. Left a message about 4:00 this morning and something happened, it’s not posted. My message was to thank you for posting such a beautiful love story. And that I hope this story will be continued we would like to know what happens to Aerin in the future. Thanks for sharing.

    2. Dainty, Hellbent, and new friends: thanks for the comments. Honestly: was tough to pull this together, but it was worth it. Am v glad you liked it. Ok. I hear you. It may take a while for an update on her story, but it will be coming.

      • Well this was a pleasant surprise. I am always seeking an episode from your creativity. So much, I had to buy a smaller electronic device so that I might read your input on the go. Now, for me buying another electronic anything is saying a lot. I am one of the “dial phone” “get up and change the channel” “do not Text me and expect an answer” old school DIE HARD. But, your writing genius persuaded me to become a mobile reader at my neighborhood “coffee house.” Please continue to write

    3. Beautiful story. I could feel Aerin’s struggle. I would love to read about the 18 months in between their first time and Chris’ final moments. I sure it would be moving.
