    Nobis Pacem Chapter 1

I could hear her continuing to give Joe instructions as they walked down the hall.

Truth be told, I felt really nervous about this latest round of therapy. It’s supposed to be the latest experimental thing – fine, but the recovery from the last one, which was also supposed to be highly successful, really took a lot out of me. I was a gamer, but when I was in the throes of my constant heaving over the toilet, after returning to our penthouse from the hospital, I thought I wouldn’t survive it. I told the doctor so, but not Aerin, because I wanted to show her that I would, as I promised her, fight this with everything I had, and would try every treatment out there.

I sighed as I thought to myself while I fumbled with the scarf, Maybe everything I have is just not going to be enough, love. I’m trying , but… I’m really sorry about that.

I twisted the ends of the scarf into a knot, after draping the scarf over my head, as artfully as I could, to add a final flourish.

    “Ready!” I called out.

    Aerin, 6 months after

I lay back spread-eagled on our bed, remembering our last conversation.

It had been a stupid one. Or maybe stupid-sounding to those around us.

I was mopping your fevered brow with a new, erstwhile soft and fluffy face towel. It was one of those, the ones made in France with Turkish cotton that you’d stocked your elegant bathrooms with, remember?  I’d drenched the towel in a mix of your favorite perfume and warm water. There were all kinds of tubes stuck everywhere in your body, including your beautifully reconstructed nose, except for down your throat.

Everyone was in the room. Everyone important to us, that is.   Even that energetic toddler, TJ, who I carefully sat at the foot of your bed because I knew you enjoyed watching him play. No one could anticipate, though that he would scamper over and around you, to the horror and consternation of his moms, Bette and Tina. But you loved it, you’d whispered to me.

Anyway, that afternoon, while I wiped your brow, you seemed to have more energy than usual. Able to talk with some volume. Or at least talk beyond whispering.

      • Here in spirit. But this is about a few special L words that play out in a couple’s life in another part of town. In the fringes of the world of the series I’ve been writing; but different. Hope you like it.

    1. Will try this again. Left a message about 4:00 this morning and something happened, it’s not posted. My message was to thank you for posting such a beautiful love story. And that I hope this story will be continued we would like to know what happens to Aerin in the future. Thanks for sharing.

    2. Dainty, Hellbent, and new friends: thanks for the comments. Honestly: was tough to pull this together, but it was worth it. Am v glad you liked it. Ok. I hear you. It may take a while for an update on her story, but it will be coming.

      • Well this was a pleasant surprise. I am always seeking an episode from your creativity. So much, I had to buy a smaller electronic device so that I might read your input on the go. Now, for me buying another electronic anything is saying a lot. I am one of the “dial phone” “get up and change the channel” “do not Text me and expect an answer” old school DIE HARD. But, your writing genius persuaded me to become a mobile reader at my neighborhood “coffee house.” Please continue to write

    3. Beautiful story. I could feel Aerin’s struggle. I would love to read about the 18 months in between their first time and Chris’ final moments. I sure it would be moving.
