Nobis Pacem Chapter 1
“I’m sorry about that,” Christina said quietly, as she resumed holding me by an elbow. Something inside me stirred when I felt her warm touch again. “His voice, that aggressiveness earlier, must have been jarring,” she added in an apologetic tone.
Without asking, she grabbed hold of my handbag, which was hanging loosely from my other arm. I didn’t realize that it was slipping off, and had nearly fallen to the floor.
“Are your keys in here?” she asked.
I nodded, and locked my gaze again on the front doors to my apartment, feeling an increasing desperation to escape into its protective embrace.
“Is your butler in?”
I shook my head. “I’ve asked the staff and the cook to only come in during the day now. I wanted them to supplement my parents’ staff in their place. B-b-because -”
We got to my door, and I leaned my forehead on its smooth, cool surface. “That’s okay, no need to explain,” she said kindly.
Christina was rummaging through the contents of my bag. She asked, “So there’s no one in there who can be with you?”
“No.”
A few seconds later, she’d found my keys. “And tomorrow?” she asked again.
My lower lip shook and I bit it. A few tears fell on the floor.
I was still leaning against the door, and felt a hand tentatively rub my back slowly.
“I’ve got no one now,” I said quietly. “Or no family, at least.”
She tried a few keys on the keyhole before finally finding the right one. I stepped back from the door as she pushed the doors open.
We stepped into the entryway of my apartment in silence. The sensor had picked up our movements and lights began switching on all over the apartment.
She helped me out of my heavy winter coat and slung it on an arm as she turned to shut the doors. She carried the coat on her arm like it was nothing. I remained in the entryway, unmoving.
“This way?” she asked, as she held me by the elbow again to guide me further into the apartment.
I guessed that she was asking about my bedroom, so I pointed with my chin mutely to the far end of the apartment.

Bette and tina????
Here in spirit. But this is about a few special L words that play out in a couple’s life in another part of town. In the fringes of the world of the series I’ve been writing; but different. Hope you like it.
What a beautiful story! Your writing is such a treat to read as you evoke every emotion.
Will try this again. Left a message about 4:00 this morning and something happened, it’s not posted. My message was to thank you for posting such a beautiful love story. And that I hope this story will be continued we would like to know what happens to Aerin in the future. Thanks for sharing.
What an amazing story ! So glad I stumbled upon this treasure !
Sad and sweet -but you said it complete.
Dainty, Hellbent, and new friends: thanks for the comments. Honestly: was tough to pull this together, but it was worth it. Am v glad you liked it. Ok. I hear you. It may take a while for an update on her story, but it will be coming.
Well this was a pleasant surprise. I am always seeking an episode from your creativity. So much, I had to buy a smaller electronic device so that I might read your input on the go. Now, for me buying another electronic anything is saying a lot. I am one of the “dial phone” “get up and change the channel” “do not Text me and expect an answer” old school DIE HARD. But, your writing genius persuaded me to become a mobile reader at my neighborhood “coffee house.” Please continue to write
Beautiful story. I could feel Aerin’s struggle. I would love to read about the 18 months in between their first time and Chris’ final moments. I sure it would be moving.
