The Secret of Kew Garden Hills

Woman after woman walked in, and she wondered if each was Ashley. She had heard of people using fake pictures.  Rina didn’t trust that what she saw in a picture would  be what would show up in person. Finally, a woman approached her. ”Hi,” the stranger said, in such a sweet, melodic voice that made her insides melt.

”How did you know it was me?” Rina responded.

”Well, don’t take this the wrong way, but the way you are dressed, not showing any skin, with your head fully covered. You mentioned it, and you are the only one in here dressed that way on such a hot day,” Ashley said. Ashley said she was 35, but she looked much younger. Would someone lie about their age and make themselves older? Only if they wanted to hear “Wow you look great for your age,” Rina thought, laughing to herself.  Ashley’s skin was clear, and she wore little make up. There were no lines anywhere. She had clear hazel eyes. Looking at her reminded her of being on vacation. Was it the color of emeralds?  And light brown hair. What did Ashley say her heritage was? Such an unusual combination that made her pretty, in a friendly, approachable way.

”What can I get you?” Ashley asked kindly. It had been a while since anyone had asked Rina that. It took her a minute to process the question. ”What?” she  finally answered.

    Ashley smiled. ”Coffee? Tea? Water?”

    ”Oh…Thank you. Water is fine.”

Ashley returned with two waters and sat down. The smile, Rina couldn’t  take it. And Ashley’s eyes. The way she looked at Rina with  genuine concern? admiration? attraction? Rina didn’t know what it was. Rina had very little dating experience, and especially dating women. There were women she associated with at temple and the yeshiva, but no one that she would consider a friend. And definitely, no one she could ever tell this, her secret. Rina always felt like an outcast in her community, and was wondering if this was why. It never made her excited to think about living with a man, but she figured that the arranged marriage made it hard for her to feel true attraction to her husband. What Rina was feeling now, she liked. And Ashley made her feel like she was the only person in the room. Not a wife, not a mom, just a person.

    1. Very sweet story. Now will Rina and Ashley become a couple? Or is this just a short term dallance? A married woman with two children in a religiously conservative family and community is going to be a hard environment to escape. Its a wonder she has computer access.
