The Secret of Kew Garden Hills

“Oh I must run. This was so nice.”

“When can I see you again?” Ashley asked not as a question, but as an affirmation of the fact that they needed to see each other again.

“I don’t know…” Rina responded, unsure of herself.

    Ashley looked at her phone.

“I know you said Sundays you have free time sometimes, in the morning when you take the younger one to school. I can meet you then, in your area.” Ashley insisted.

Rina thought about being seen with Ashley in her area. “I would like that very much. Except…”

“Except what?” Ashley said, her eyes opening wide again.

“I need you to wear a long skirt, and long sleeves, so you look like us,” even though your ass in those jeans makes me want to grab it and kiss you, Rina thought, surprised at the boldness of her own thoughts.

“Of course. I will look forward to it,”  Ashley said, as the girls stood up, not taking their eyes off each other. They hugged goodbye, and Rina thought she hadn’t understood the meaning of chemistry this much since high school science class.

Ashley was seeing Shea, another girl from the lesbian dating site. She didn’t want to get her hopes up about Rina, but could not stop thinking about her. Ashley decided to fool around with Shea, in a bid to get Rina off her mind. Ashley and Shea  had finished dinner and were standing on the sidewalk, near Ashley’s apartment. It was only date three. It was a Saturday night.  Ashley usually avoided Saturday night dates in the beginning. On weeknights, there was always the “I have to get up for work” excuse for leaving early. On Fridays, she could be tired from the week.  Saturday nights had little excuses. There’s the lame” I’m getting up early to have brunch with my family” line, which is such an old lady thing to say that even if it were true, Ashley doubted she would use it. “ I have a 9 am spin class” sounded ridiculously compulsive and too much like an excuse, since there are many spin classes throughout the day and the good old option of cardio on one’s own.

So now, here they stood in that early relationship phase awkwardness of not being sure if the other person liked you, even though they have agreed to a third date, and what the expectations are that come along with a third date in NYC.

    1. Very sweet story. Now will Rina and Ashley become a couple? Or is this just a short term dallance? A married woman with two children in a religiously conservative family and community is going to be a hard environment to escape. Its a wonder she has computer access.
