The Secret of Kew Garden Hills

The two girls entered the apartment. It was a small, typical Manhattan apartment, but tastefully decorated and set up in the usual way New Yorkers do to maximize space. Ashley had a three-seat couch with storage bins under the leg rests, and two storage ottomans as the table.

“The couch opens up if you want to sleep over,” Ashley said, regretting the words as they came out of her mouth.

    “What?” Shea responded.

“Oh nothing. I don’t know, like if it gets late and you don’t want to go home cuz it is cold and late and I don’t know if you can get a cab up here or if you have something to do in the morning or …”  Ashley turned red at her bad habit of babbling quickly when she was nervous.

Shea smiled at her, not sure how to respond. “Where can I put my coat?” she asked as she took it off.

“Oh, here, let me hang it up for you,” Ashley said, taking it. “Sorry I didn’t mean to be rude. Do you want something to drink? I think I have wine or if you want different wine the liquor store delivers til midnight.” Ashley was just thankful to change the subject.

“Whatever you have is fine, after the first couple of glasses I stop noticing,” Shea said. She sat on the couch and picked the remote off of the ottoman to turn the TV on. “Maybe there’s something on regular cable….Oh, look, Mean Girls. I’ve seen this movie so many times, it is on every day. Have you seen it? Pre meltdown Lindsey,” she said. Ashley sat down and hoped that would be ok. Ashley wasn’t sure if she wanted to concentrate on a whole new movie right now, as her thoughts kept bouncing back and forth between the nervous anticipation of whether something was going to happen, and whether she even wanted it to. “I’ve actually driven past her childhood home on LI. Are you impressed?”

“Oh nice, is it a huge mansion?” Ashley said, happier that Shea had an actual story to tell and not just boring chit chat.

“No, actually you wouldn’t even know it was a star’s house, it is just kind of set back from the curb with a gross gated fence around it. I guess Dina couldn’t handle the upkeep. I heard it is in foreclosure now anyway,” Shea added. “Sorry, I watch E! News a little too much.”

    1. Very sweet story. Now will Rina and Ashley become a couple? Or is this just a short term dallance? A married woman with two children in a religiously conservative family and community is going to be a hard environment to escape. Its a wonder she has computer access.
