The Last Photograph
“And I promise we’ll stop at the bookstore after we done with clothes shopping.”
This time it was Rose that grinning, “Thanks.” Vanessa always knew what to say to cheer her up.
Vanessa beamed back, “Now drink your so precise latte that I brought for you.”
Rose laughed and did as she was told. She knew how many times that Vanessa would poke fun at her for her utterly strict drink order. Rose couldn’t help it. If it wasn’t her latte, then it was her tea, always with the bag in. She was just set in her ways. She always had to have her drink exactly as she wanted, right down to the smallest detail. The only one who knew how to get her order exactly right, other than herself and her dad, was Vanessa and that was only because she brought Rose’s drinks often.
As she drank, she couldn’t help but stare at Vanessa who was meanwhile watching the people passing by, entering and exiting the shops, trudging after their parents on a family shopping trip, rushing to buy presents for their love ones or hanging out with a group of friends. The sun from the sky light windows beamed down on her, highlighting her red hair and making her blue eyes sparkle. Rose couldn’t help but think her friend was pretty in that light.
There it was again.
A warm fuzzy feeling was spreading beneath her chest. Rose has been getting it a lot lately but she had no idea what it meant. It only happened when she stared at Vanessa for too long as she was now.
Quickly, Rose adverted her eyes down and place her now empty cup down. She hadn’t even realised she had finished drinking, too busy looking at Vanessa.
“You ready?” Vanessa asked, surprised. It usually took Rose longer to drink her drink, what with it being extra hot and all.
“Um….just a sec.” Rose quickly pluck Vanessa’s drink out of her hand and took a long gulp to cool down her now scalding tongue. She let out a gasp of relief when she was done, “Now I am.”
Vanessa burst out laughing, covering her mouth with her hand. Rose’s felt her face go red but giggled too. She couldn’t help it. She always found Vanessa’s laugh contagious, even when it was at her expense.

*Really* great story. Terrific job blending the flashback with the present and tapping into the emotions of both. I love these characters, and I think you did a fabulous job with them. I hope you keep writing!
Nice job. There were a few typos, but other than that I liked it. It was sweet.
