Circles and Circles – (Chapter: The fragments break me every time (chap 12))

When there was nothing more to throw, Spencer halted, her breathing erratic and her cheeks wet with tears. Then she saw it. The photo of Glen, it’s front pane shattered, lying sideways under the shelf it had been on, now askew on the floor. Sobbing harder, she fell to her knees, picking it up, brushing the glass off it, and ignoring the sharp pain as one of the shards lanced into the palm of her hand. Photo of Glen in hand, she watched as the blood welled up around the wound, the shard penetrating her like a post modern sculpture.

It was like this that Ashley found her, on her knees in the wreckage of her devastation, bleeding and sobbing.

“Fuck” She swore, running to Spencer, and skidding to halt on her knees next to her.

“Spence, baby, hang on” she grabbed Spencer’s hand, feeling the blood that was now running fairly freely wash over on her own hand. “Christ, Spence, we have to get that out.” She was concentrating on holding Spencer’s wrist, but she just caught the angry whisper that escaped the blonde’s lips.

    “Don’t. Call. Me. That.”

Ashley swallowed and then gently drew Spencer to her feet. She led her to the kitchen, which was relatively unscathed from hurricane Spencer, and pulled her over to the sink. Running warm water, she gently pulled the shard of glass from Spencer’s palm, wincing in sympathy at the blondes short, sharp intake of breath, and then clamped her thumb over the remaining gash. She gently washed the hand under the tap, to make sure there were no fragments of glass left, and then grabbed a clean tea towel from the bottom drawer. Wrapping the hand gently, she tied it off, stemming the bleeding for the moment. Task aside, she looked at Spencer, who was staring at her own feet, as though in a trance. Gently she lifted the girls head, nocking a thumb under her chin.

Spencer jerked her head away, as though stung by the touch.

    “Go away” she muttered.

“No” Ashley shook her head gently. Her voice was soft, but she wielded the statement as though it were made of steel.

“Ashley” Spencer sounded defeated. “Please leave me alone”

“I can’t Spencer.” She waved a hand around the room. “You’re hurting, and I know you well enough to know you’ll try to tough it out alone.”

“Yeah, I’m hurting” Spencer bit back. “And you’re the reason why.”

“I know” Ashley grabbed her hand, looking down and finding Glen’s photo, still grasped firmly by the frame in Spencer’s hand. “Spencer, we need to talk about this.”

“What’s to talk about” Spencer pulled away bitterly. “Don’t you think enough has gone on between us Ashley. We can’t fix what happened. I still hate you.”

“No you don’t” Ashley argued. “You can say it all you like Spence, but you don’t hate me”

Spencer shot Ashley a look laced with venom. But the brunette continued.

“What happened that night Spencer. It was an accident.”

    “Oh really” jeered Spencer.

Ashley looked at her in surprise. “Hell yes Spencer, what the fuck? You know I couldn’t have known that car was coming. I know you blame me for Glen’s death, I know, I understand. If I were you, I’d blame me too, but somewhere deep down we both know it was an accident Spencer. A tragic, painful accident.”

Spencer wheeled around, her face vivid with anger.

“I KNOW it was an accident Ash. I’m not stupid. The car, the car wasn’t your fault. But Glen’s death was. Your fault and mine. You had to take us up there that night. You had to play your stupid fucking games, just to make the pain of breaking up with me worse didn’t you. You and your fucking girlfriend and your sick, sick games. And my fucking stupidity playing along”

    Ashley’s face went ashen.

    “What..” she whispered.

Spencer pulled away sharply, backing off.

Ashley stared at her, eyes burning.

“Right” she said. “Right”. And with that, she walked out of the apartment, leaving Spencer alone in her devastation.

    1. Ack! I love it! I’m totally delurking just so I can express my deep and utter LOVE for you and your fic. It’s amazing. Really. I’m almost embarassed to admit that I wait daily for it and check for it throughout the day. Anyway, it’s passionate, powerful, and so believable. Though the girls (and the other characters we’ve met) are so, so different from the girls on the show, you’ve done an amazing job of making their transformations and thoughts and actions so believable. LOVE IT! And update soon! Like, NOW!

    2. good job as per usual, but you already knew that didn’t you? :-P I hope you plan to post more too, as it provides a good distraction from work and other lame things like going to bed ;-)

    3. Damn i thought maybe spencer would forgive ashley. Damn spencer has to do something to fix this. Ashley is trying so hard to make things right. Post more soon.
