Completely Incomplete – (Chapter: 2)
“Spence, don’t freak out. You’re gonna get in to every school you applied to. I know it,” she said, trying to reassure me with a light kiss on the lips.
“Knock on wood. Right now, Ash. Do it,” I insisted. She laughed, but knocked on the wood paneling of the center console in her car. We pulled up to my house and I noticed that both of my parents’ cars were in the driveway, which was weird but expected, given how important today was. She stopped the car and took my hand in hers, pressing her lips to it gently.
“Don’t worry, babe. It’s just college, right?” she joked. I tried to laugh, but couldn’t. “Want me to come inside?”
“No, it’s probably not a good idea, given that my mom’s home and everything.” My mother tolerated my relationship with Ashley (barely), but still, things were about 100 times tenser when the two were under the same roof.
“Good point. Call me when you find out.”
“I will,” I promised.
“Good luck, Spence. I love you,” she said. My stomach still fluttered when hearing those words. She was everything to me. Everything.
“I love you too,” I replied with a smile. I kissed her, feeling some of my nerves fade away with such contact. But when I pulled away, all of that was gone. I got out of the car and walked inside, knowing that my parents had probably gotten the mail already.
They were standing around the kitchen table, holding a bunch of envelopes.
“You’re finally home!” my dad exclaimed.
“Yup,” I replied meekly.
“You have no idea how much willpower it took us not to open these, Spence,” my mother admitted. I smiled and took another look at the pile before me. This was it, I thought.

When all was said and done, I had been accepted to all 3 of my top choices: UCLA, UC-Berkeley, and Vanderbilt. I evaluated it this way: UCLA meant Ashley; Berkeley probably meant Ashley, too; Vanderbilt—not Ashley. And I had chosen the only one that meant I would have to lose her. How could I have been so damn stupid? That’s not to say the choice was easy. But my mother was pushing me for Vanderbilt every step of the way, especially since it was her alma-mater, and it had sort of been a dream of mine to go there; I even had pictures of myself as a baby wearing clothes from the college. One day, I just mailed in the letter, notifying them that I had chosen their school. How could I have been so damn stupid? Ashley didn’t take the news so well. A week went by before she would even talk to me again. Two weeks after that, we had the talk…

Kozmic, not only will I read “Hamster,” I’ll read the sequel, “Guinea Pig.” Okay, I’m going to get serious for a second Kozmic: I work in the TV/movie industry and believe me when I say that comparatively, your writing is fantastic. Pursue it, in the event you’re not. Okay everyone, hold onto your ta ta’s – looks like the chapter delving into the Spashley break up is going to be drama filled…and I love it!
