Ashley breathed shallowly, trying not to move. She heard Spencer’s mother enter the room and felt the older woman settle down on the bed above her. She stayed completely still, her heart was beating hard against her ribs and tried to keep her legs from twitching. Shit this is a terrible time to have to pee. Ashley turned her ear to the conversation going on above her.

“I just wanted to drop by and make sure you were really doing okay, you sounded strange on the phone and I was coming back from you Aunt Patricia’s house in New Mexico and you were on the way so here I am, wow, your room is really messy!” Ashley could imagine Spencer rolling her eyes at her mother and had to stifle a giggle with her fist.

“It only looks messy because it’s small, did you want to go to breakfast or something? There’s a good doughnut shop about five minutes away… you could go wait in the Tahoe and I’ll come out front as soon as I’m dressed,” she knew Spencer was trying to get her Mother out of the room, but Mommy dearest didn’t seem to be biting on the bait.

“Well sweetie, I would but your brother is supposed to be home soon and I don’t want him coming home to an empty house. I just stopped by to catch up. So tell me how is Aiden?” This time Ashley was the one to roll her eyes under the fluffy comforter. She heard Spencer mumble something about them breaking up and her prim mother let out a tiny gasp.

“Whatever for? Oh Spencer, I’m so sorry. Was it because of you know what?”

“No! Jeez Mom! That’s not your business anyway!” Spencer snapped back in response. Ashley’s interest peaked. What is, you know what?Hmm… Mark that down on the list of things to ask Spencer. Laying there listening to the two of them talk, Ash realized she didn’t know much at all about Spencer or her life.
