    Aftermath

    It hadn’t come as a surprise. I had expected as much as soon as I took a look at her… she was sick and Spencer was going to find out tonight; that’s why I would be ‘needed,’ as Mr. Carlin had said. The entire meal I was internally freaking out. Sure, Paula and I weren’t exactly the best of friends, and Spencer and Paula’s relationship had seen better days, but cancer? It would tear Spencer apart. The minute she found out, she dashed upstairs, presumably to her bedroom. I rose out of instinct but as soon as Paula did the same, I sat back down. This was her place; Spencer needed her first. When she had disappeared upstairs, Ben, Karen, and Mr. Carlin filled me, Glen, and Clay in on the full story. She had been diagnosed last week but it had been a late diagnosis… what had apparently begun as melanoma had rapidly spread to her lymph nodes. Treatment options were limited but they would begin radiation therapy on Monday. It seemed strange that Paula, being a doctor, wouldn’t recognize the symptoms earlier, but I guess that’s just how things work out sometimes. The boys excused themselves and Mr. Carlin, after an apologetic glance, followed them out; it was just me, Karen, and Ben left. Talk about awkward.

    “Dishes?” Karen suggested.

    “Good idea,” I affirmed. Ben was on his way into the kitchen with us when his hospital pager went off. He excused himself to make a phone call, leaving just Karen and I in the kitchen. I assumed my position in front of the sink and began to think. How would Spencer react? Her mother had never approved of me, or of Spencer being gay. Would we be over? Or would her mother try to convince her that her illness was God’s punishment for Spencer’s sexuality? A pit formed in my stomach as I imagined the possibilities.

    “Ashley,” Karen said as she snapped her fingers. “Earth to Ashley.” I looked at her. “I said can you pass the other bottle of soap?”

    “What? Oh… sorry,” I apologized as I handed her the bottle.

    “You know, Spencer’s a strong girl. It’ll be tough, but she’ll get through this.”

    “I know. I’m just wondering whether we’ll get through this. I mean, you know, our relationship.”

    1. i thought a little diffrently from 2BPoetic i think that now since paula has the cancer she’ll relize how she has little time left and would make peace with ashely cause if ur going to die wouldn’t you want to leave ur family happy and ash makes spence happy…so there are my thoughts oh yhea grat post!!
