    Aftermath

    “Yeah, I understand.” Seeing as how she had no answers to that question, we continued washing dishes in silence. About 10 minutes later, Mr. C. came down and, silently, began helping us with the dishes. 5 minutes after that, Paula descended the stairs.

    “Ashley… Spencer wants you,” she called out. I put a plate down and headed towards the stairs. I figured I should say something to her, but I wasn’t really sure what it should be.

    “Um… I’m… I’m really-“

    “I know,” she interrupted. She then walked past me and into the kitchen. I climbed the stairs and entered Spencer’s room. Our eyes locked; she had obviously been crying. I walked over to the bed and sat down, taking her hand in mine as I did so.

    “I’m so sorry baby,” I told her, pausing for a little before speaking again. “I don’t think there’s anything I can say that’ll make this better. We just have to have faith that everything will work itself out for the best.”

    “My mom is dying. How is that going to work itself out?” she questioned, her voice cracking with the prospect of oncoming tears.

    “There’s treatment,” I said; I wondered how much her mother had told her. “She’s starting on Monday.”

    “And what if that doesn’t work?”

    “There are other options.” There were, right?

    “Even if there were, I doubt insurance would cover it,” she insisted.

    “Spence, are you serious? Don’t worry; money is not an issue here.”

    “We couldn’t ask you to-“

    “You’re not asking. I’m telling you… money is not an issue.”

    “Thank you,” she said quietly. A silence filled the air; neither of us was sure what came next.

    “It’s going to be okay, babe.” She nodded before throwing her arms around me and then began crying into my shoulder. I didn’t know what else to do but rub her back and hold on tight.

     

    I don’t know we fell asleep, but when I awoke it was still dark outside. We were both wearing our clothes from yesterday and were in the same position we had apparently fallen asleep in. My stirring woke Spencer up and within moments, it became clear just how much she had cried last night.

    “Good morning,” I said quietly. She gave me a quick kiss.

    1. i thought a little diffrently from 2BPoetic i think that now since paula has the cancer she’ll relize how she has little time left and would make peace with ashely cause if ur going to die wouldn’t you want to leave ur family happy and ash makes spence happy…so there are my thoughts oh yhea grat post!!
