Grow Old With Me – (Chapter: One Is Silver, The Other Gold)

     “Ash?”

    “Mmm?”

“What are you doing?” I asked. She was obviously reading the newspaper… but that was probably the first time I’d ever seen her do it before. She would always argue that she ‘didn’t need to read a newspaper to know how fucked up the world is.’

“Looking,” she replied without moving her head from the page.

    “Looking?”

    “Yeah… at houses.”

    “Houses? Why?”

    “I don’t know… I’m thinking of getting a place over here, too.”

    “Really?”

“Yeah. I’m always in L.A. anyway, for work stuff too. And now with… this…” she trailed off, obviously referring to my mom. “I just think it’s a good idea, you know?”

    “Yup,” I agreed wholeheartedly.

“But basically I just want to follow you across the country,” she joked.

“I knew that was the reason!”

“I won’t deny it,” she giggled.

“So when does the house-hunting begin?”

“Well, I have an appointment with a realtor on Thursday.” Knowing Ashley, she would be a proud L.A.-area homeowner by Friday. Ash was an impulsive shopper and I was willing to bet she would splurge for the first thing she liked. And it wasn’t like she didn’t have the money to do that anyway.

    “Get something good,” I joked.

“Oh I will… I always do,” she grinned and leaned in close; I met her the last inch and brought our lips together, kissing her deeply.

I had stayed home for the past 2 weeks while Ashley had gone back to New York for stuff with the band. She spent Thursday and Friday here last week, and had brought me my missing schoolwork, but had called at least twice a day when she was away; she had just come last night too, although we were both leaving the next morning for New York. I could never fully describe how amazing she had been the past 2 weeks with everything.

My mom had been responding to treatments; not as well as they had hoped, but still enough to make it effective. She wasn’t cured, or even close to cured for that matter, but the cancer had stopped spreading for now and things were looking up. I didn’t like to think about it; I found that the busier I was, the less time I actually had to think about it, so when Ashley wasn’t here, I spent a lot of time on schoolwork.

    1. Good to see an old-school fan fic writer back in action-not that I don’t enjoy the new stuff…it’s just that a familiar name is always welcome.

    2. Hmm, is this the calm before the storm? Nonetheless, I’m still loving this story and your writing. I’d like to apologize for not commenting on the last chapter. I still had food poisoning, which was just all kinds of wrong…not that it’s ever right, but I definitely know that a lack of comments can be a writer’s kryptonite. As always, looking forward to the next update. Holla!

    3. I know it’s nice for the writers to see that readers comment on their stories… I always read the updates in a rush but that’s no excuse… the point is that I’m always glad when I realize you’ve updated your story.

    4. Have I told you how happy I am to have you back?! Well I am completely stoked. For some reason I have this itch in me for the whole school to walk into Spencer’s room and she that she is sleeping with the hottest rockstar in the nation! lol, maybe cause that is what I wish would happen to me?? lol…great story!
