Next Time Around – (Chapter: The phrase that pays)

Spencer and Ashley each fell back into a hug full of numerous ‘I’m sorry’s’ on the couch. The great thing about their relationship was that they could argue for 24 hours straight and threaten to break up, but by the time morning rolled around, it was all forgotten and forgiven.

Sadly, the same was never true for Mrs. And Mr. C. Their arguments would end but it remained on the back of their minds all the time.

As Paula made her way up the stairs, she peeked into the open door leading to Glen and Clay’s room. Clay was putting things in a few boxes around his room. Spelling bee trophy’s and Math club awards. He was always so smart. His brilliance really set him apart from everyone else, which scared Paula. She never wanted him to feel left out, or secluded by his books, but he managed fine and she was proud of him. “Good night boys.” Paula said sticking her head in the door for a second. She noticed glen sitting on the bed looking at the ground as if something was wrong.

He managed to look up for a second to give her some false release. “Good night, mom.” The boys said in unison. Paula shut the door and made her way to her bedroom door. She took a deep breath and held it in for a few beats before letting it out slowly. The door was shut, which she expected. She reached for the knob and turned it slightly before realizing it was locked. This was her turn to sleep on the couch.

    Meanwhile in the boy’s room…

“You know, I don’t have one sports award.” Clay said with a smile on his face.

Glen shifted a bit. “What about when you played little league?” He asked.

“I got kicked off the team, remember? Coach said I was more dedicated than any of the other players, but I just wasn’t good.” Clay laughed.

“Look, man.” Glen said as he stood up and made his way next to his brother. He placed his hand on his shoulder and put on a serious face. “I know I haven’t been the best brother. Not even a good one. I just want you to know that I’m sorry.” Glen really had been feeling guilty for the way he was. He loved his siblings a lot, but he just had a bad way of showing it.
